Was on my way into work today and stopped by a pawn shop close to work. Usually stop in there once a week just to see what they have. Today they took in a gun as I was standing there that had been severely neglected as it had some surface rust but looked complete. Although the internals seemed to be as filthy as the outside of it as the trigger wouldnt reset after initially pulling the hammer back. I looked it over and offered a $10 bill for it and walked out with a Great Western Arms derringer..... has to be either 38 special or 38 S&W. Havent got it home yet to really check and see but am happy with an old derringer for $10

Tinkered with it before work.... its chambered for 38 S&W. Is it possible do you think to ream it on out to 38 Special? Why I ask I think I have two or maybe three rounds of 38 smith.... and lots of 38 special. They made them in 38 special as well so I figured just maybe...... thought Id see what you guys think

The 38 S&W has a base diameter of .387" while the 38 Special has a base diameter of .379". Those numbers are based on Rem-Peters factory ammo I measured. I'm not aware of what the chamber specifications are like for the 38 S&W but they are probably available from SAAMI. While perhaps doable, far from ideal. I wouldn't want to deal with over expanded 38 special brass that needs to be segregated and how much are you really going to shoot a derringer anyway? Probably be best to leave it be and just load (or buy) a bit 38 S&W every once in a while.
