375 Atomic,my best guess is 175 #.The biologist thinks it's 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 years old. That was my guess as well.I had taken a boar that was about 150# and was tooth aged at 4 1/2 and another that was about 225 and was aged at 5 1/2.This bear was in between the size of those two.Unfortunately,Montana has stopped tooth aging them.Total weight of the meat plus hide with head and feet in,was 90 lbs and I usually figure that to be one half the bear's live weight.
Oh,and this was in a spot where I could get the truck within 50 yds and had a plastic sled along for the drag so that influenced my decision too.

I told you guys a while back "Shortbarrel" is the real deal, he does it the right way! Nice color phase bear, I'm surprised it isn't rubbed anywhere, really a nice pelt. Good job with that Mountain Gun.

Beautiful color phase! My only bear is jet black, from Idaho in 1975.

Simply outstanding. I haven't, as yet, had any luck in taking a black bear, much less be choosy about color phases. But,,, maybe one day,,,,,,,,,,!

Thanks for the kind words guys.Dick the rubbing thing is kind of a crap shoot. You just have to look them over. Our season ends June 15th and I've seen unrubbed bears at the end and even after, especially big, mature boars. One year,a lot of the bears were rubbed early, like mid-May and I have no idea why.It wasn't an unusually warm Spring.I've heard all the theories and I still don't know why some rub and some don't. I do know that they start hitting the rub trees, right out of hibernation and continue through the rut which is going on right now. After that it slows down some. Here are a couple big guys who are still around.I may go after that red one next year but there's no way I could pass that big, dark brown one if he gets within range.Choices...

We've noticed the same thing with rubbing, some years we've taken bears quite early & they've had rub spots (bummer) other times we've shot them 3 weeks later & they've been fine, never figured out the reason. Hope you whack one of those big boys. Hoping to make it up for white tails again in October.
