Just got it home yesterday. Pretty good shape overall for a gun made in 1961, pretty much all original, new Win red pad added and luckily the stock was not cut as so often happens, so nice long 14" LOP which works pretty well for me. Found a crack in the dried out wood in the recoil lug area. Was going to immediately glass bed but am experimenting with another method at least to start with. I have some very thin Super Glue that I use in my R/C boat modeling and some gel as well. So drilled a couple holes about half way thru the area, then filled the holes with the thin stuff, and worked the crack open and close to let the glue run all over, then as it soaked in, gave it some more, then topped off with some mixed up Acra Glas gel and clamped it shut. Cured overnight, cleaned up some excess and I think good to go. There were no cracks in the trigger web area oddly enough, but I did the same thing there anyway. It all appears very stable now. Worst case scenario, I end up having to glass bed it all anyway, oh well. I hope to shoot it this coming week. If it shows promise I will post some pics of it.

I have wanted a pre-64 in 300 H&H for a long time. I don't think I need more than my 30-06 can give, but what's need got to do with anything when it comes to such a classic combo.

I got my first two deer with one, my dads custom barreled .284 Win. Featherweight. That was outside Sitka, AK, in winter of '68. Its one year younger than this one, made in '61. There is something about the stock fit on these pre-64's that really work. With the added LOP on this one its really sweet on the bench.

I had grown up shooting and hunting with Remington 700's. That obsession with the 700 ended about 10 years ago at the end of my senior year of high school. I went in to a local shop and they had a pre-64 in 300 H&H. I wasn't able to afford but it changed my way of thinking. You could just feel the soul in that old rifle.

I really am liking this one. Its been beat up a bit, needed bedding, did that. Had some minor bore issues, seem to be working thru them. It fits me very well and the action is like oiled butter, its just so smooth.

A pre-64 Winchester in 300 H&H has been a Rifle that somehow never made it home with me. When I had the Money, could not find one. When I didn't, well you all know the Story.

I traded for one 20 years ago and then had it set up with 2 barrels. One in .375 H&H Imp. and one in .300 WBY

I have a buddy that inherited a '50's Model 70 in 300 H&H. I'm his reloader and he's had great success with a load using AA 3100 powder. Trouble is Accurate apparently stopped making or distributing 3100. Every year he sends me a picture of the gun with the latest elk. Not sure where we will go with powder choice once he runs out of the few he has left.

Princeout, I too was shooting aa3100 until I ran out, I switched to MagPro and have had very good luck. You might try it, it provides me with more velocity than 3100 did.
