Hi guys. Not hunting right now, but I may in the future. I have a few cartridges that really make me smile and the 10mm Auto is one of them. I have heard many a hunting story of the 10mm taking game with good ammo, a well tuned pistol, and, as you'd expect, good shot placement.
My question is, what are the 10mm's limits? I mean in terms of accuracy, distance, and power. I live in AZ and feel it's a great trail gun as, with good heavy bullets, I feel I could defend myself against any animal in the state. But maybe I'm wrong. What can you guys tell me about hunting with the 10mm Auto?

10mm have been used for hunting for decades now, there are many 175/180 & 200gr bullets out there that will do the job, even against bear, wouldn't be my first choice but I like larger bore calibers moving slower for dangerous game like that and bigger. I have in over 25yrs of hand gun hunting never used a 10mm but many guys have. It's personal preference, I like to hunt with revolvers mainly SA's most 10mm are auto's. A 10mm will take any animal in AZ and in many other states. Just use the right loads for what your hunting. I wouldn't shoot a bear with a 44mag 240gr JHP but I would all day with a 250gr keith swc hardcast over 18gr of 2400 powder for example.
I have a 6" 10mm & 5" 400 Cor bon either is very capable of taking game up to elk size with proper bullet placement(any gun obviously) and most importantly the right bullet.
If ya handload, look up the original full house 10mm loads, now there's a nice round.

I killed a couple of hogs in Florida with a G20 loaded with Federal's 10mm loads (185 grain I believe). Worked well enough IMHO.

It stops ground squirrels dead in their tracks regardless of what bullet is used.

I recently chronographed a bunch of handloads that were very consistent. I had 2 loads W/200 grain JHPs. One was Hornady XTPs, the other were Noslers. They were averaging 1,241 fps and 1,242 fps respectively from my 4.6" KKM barrel and 1,315 fps and 1,324 fps respectively from my 6" KKM barrel. I was using Accurate No.9, WLPs and a Hornady 9th Edition manual. Accuracy was good, but I was more focused the last time at the range on my chrony so I bet I can get better groups next time. Really surprised they were so fast. One more thing, don't now if it makes a difference. I was using a stainless steel guide rod with a 20 lbs. Spring instead of the stock 17 lbs. spring.

I don't own a 10 but wouldn't hesitate to use it on black bears or lions in a defensive situation. It's a good trail gun.

I dont see any difference between 125grn 357 mag jhp's from my flat top to tell you the truth. They run about the same distance and the wound channel is about the same. The 10mm is a good auto cartridge but it wont compare to serious wheel gun loads. My brother lives in Texas and we spend a couple of months with him . My job is to thin the hog population down, I have used his g-20 and usualy it has 180 grn jhp's in it. It's not breathtaking but a good hog gun with quick followup shots you need when they start to run. nothing puts them down like a wfngc out of my Reeder .475 , maybe you should get one of them??

Oh, I have a couple .44 mags,a .454 Casull, a .480 Ruger, and a .500 JRH. If I was going into grizzly country or into 500+ lbs. black bear country, those wheel guns would be on my hip well over my G20.
Where I'm at in AZ, the black bears rarely get up to 500 lbs. Against coyotes, Javalena, and mountains lions the G20 is plenty of power (at least from what I hear). I'm more curious about black bear, where I'm more likely to pack my SBH .44 Mag with WFNGC bullets.
But you are answering the question j have, which is what type animals it might stop should I encounter them in the wild. Wild hogs, Javalena, mountains lions... it will do the trick. Larger animals will require more power.
But I'm also curious if I wanted to hunt, what I could take. Deer? Antelope? I assume any handgun cartridge will require a shorter range.

I think you would be safe with medium game at reasonable ranges with the 10mm, remember some swear the wfngc load is equal to the 44 mag on game. The amount of game taken with the old 44-40 would probably fill several major league ball parks, so the hot loaded 10 mm should do nicely.

I do know that a Doubletap 220 gr hard cast will penetrate a 200 lb Whitetail from the butt out the brisket.

It was 60 yards with a 5 inch S&W 610. The deer had a superficial buckshot wound by another hunter and it was the only shot I had but it dang sure did the trick

10 is illegal in Indiana for deer I would like to use mine but not to be. That law changed this year. They opened it to include rifles that shoot .243 or .308 diameter bullets and handguns that shoot 10mm bullets.
