Well, after trying so many things, and asking for help here,, I took a few of the suggestions & applied them to my misbehaving Smiff. After carefully measuring my reloads, comparing them to factory, I found my loads pretty much mirrored factory WW white box stuff,, so that eliminated odd measurements. And since I'd had issues with the factory stuff,,, I figured it had to be in the gun. Well, I took a spent primer cup & put it under the mainspring tension screw. I then reapplied fresh nylon fishing line to the screw hole, and tightened the screw until it got snug near the bottom. Today, I test fired it. 3 moons,, factory first,,, zero misfires. I followed that with assorted reloads in a total of 17 moons,, zero misfires.
That's 120 rounds fired w/o a single misfire. I did some of them slow, some very rapidly & all went bang as they should have.
YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
More testing to come,,, but I see a new mainspring in my next parts order.

Great news!
Now hunt down a stainless 686 cylinder. Have it rechambered to 10mm and fitted to your Smith. That way you have not altered the original (not that you would have wanted to rechamber a titanium cylinder!) and have a powerful, handy field gun.

I've thought about a 10mm custom cylinder,,, but for now,,, just getting the gun to run as it should is making me happy. My monthly USPSA match was SUPPOSED to be tomorrow. Due to wet conditions & the fact it's raining right now has cancelled the match. Darn it,, I was going to put it through the paces again at a match. Well, there is next month!
