Well, Travis' day ended better than the skunks ! I've twice had luck shooting skunks in the back of the head with .22mag HP's outta my Single-Six. Not a squirt. YMMV !

We don't seem to be able to find any volunteers to skin either the skunks or the porkies..

Don't know if he's ever skinned one but I know a local trapper that has caught over a hundred porcupine's alive, he removes the fine belly hair on them & sells it for a high price, several dollars an ounce. Then he releases the porcupine. He's done this for years & tries to release them in the same general area so they are easier to locate the next year. I know he's made a lot of money over the years. I think the biggest market is to the Indians for when they do their "Sun" dance or "Rain" dance ceremony's, etc. Maybe also for fly tying, not sure but I know its quite valuable & he has a fast way of removing it without getting stuck. Fermin might know, I think he has some fine belly hair........

I was interested in the $$ part, until you mentioned that "Alive" part! hehehe I'm still quite interested in how he does it though, hmmmm.... Ray

Steve For eating them porkies, to skin'em I think you're best bet would be to burn the quills off in a fire, than get to skinnin'em... This I've seen done one time, although I wasn't around to try it once it was cooked Keep Us updated on your suck'cess!

Back in the 80's bad 90's my son would remove the king hair from porkypines and would get about $8.00 an ounce. He never got stuck, and his girl friends riding with him would get frightened at first. I never was along with him because I was always working.

As many of y'all know,,, I work in trapping wildlife. I always tell folks; " Nobody questions the cost of catching a skunk, a snake, or bats. They just pay the bill." Now,, I've skinned many skunks, and I've extracted their "essence" & store it for use in making lures & as cover scent when hunting. (A little dab will do!) But to get the fur off a porky,,, well I'd love to hear about how that's done. We don't have them critters here.

Tyrone, its just the very fine belly hair & there isn't very much of it. I can't remember how it does it but it was pretty slick as I remember. He's still doing it. And while we're talking about cover scent I'll tell you what I use to do back when I bow hunted. In this part of south east Idaho there are many thousands of sheep that summer on the public land for grazing. Years ago there were more sheep here than anywhere in the United States. We still have a lot of Basque people living in Idaho. Anyway, I used sheep urine for a cover scent because they were everywhere. Now, the question is, how did I get the urine? It was easy, once I found out the trick. I had a neighbor who was a professor at Idaho State University & he raised some sheep as a hobby. I was talking to him one day & told him I needed some sheep unrine to use when I was bowhunting to use as a cover scent. He said, thats easy, lets get you a bottle full. We ran some sheep in a pen & caught one & he had me hold the jar on the back end & when I was ready he cupped his hand over her mouth & nose & in about 3 seconds she was peeing all over the place, I had a jar full in 3-4 seconds! True story! I'd like to see Tank try it on a moose!

I love how you gathered the sheep urine! I'd pay good money to see Tank try it on a moose! That mental image made me laugh out loud! If you get the chance,,, find out just how he does get the hair off a porky! I'm curious,,, as I love learning more stuff about different critters!

Talked to my buddy today & got the skivvy on how his son in law gets the guard hair off of the porcupines. He said he flips them over with a stick onto their back & then holds their tail down with his foot & grabs ahold of their foot with his hands. Next he hoists them up into a tree & ties their tail in the tree, that way they can't flip their tail & nail him with the quills. It only takes him a few minutes to pluck the guard hair off of them & then he releases them, mostly in the same canyon so they are somewhat concentrated in one area & he can catch them again. If you've ever been to some of the Indian dances/celebrations you will see they use these guard hairs in their head dresses, etc. Would be fun to get it on video sometime!
