I did not think there were any trucks that old still pumping tanks! One like that may not even have a pump but run of a line off the manifold to create vacuum. A little different than the 400 cfm rotor vane pumps I run on my Kenworth and Freightliner.

I bet everyone on the forum would chip in to have one of yours painted like that. heck if you were go to the right body and paint shop and they'd probably do it for free.lol

Saw list of labor/work related deaths yesterday, just for Ohio and just this year. Was sadly, quite a list. One was asphixiated(spell?) while pumping manure. Being down wind of that honey dipper truck might be lethal too !

First safety ruler for pumpers is NEVER go into an empty septic tank. Methane and Hydrogen sulfide gases abound in there. Like bulasteve wrote, even lagoons can be dangerous. Several years ago in the midwest on a family dairy farm one of the sons was on a tractor cleaning out an open manure pit lagoon when he succumbed to the fumes and a brother went to get him and by the time it was all done I think it was three brothers and their dad who died. It is almost always multiple deaths because someone goes in to save the first victim and they both die. A local guy of out Salem about 15 miles away actually crawled into the tank of his pump truck to wash out the grit at the bottom after he emptied at the treatment plan. The truck waiting behind him wondered what was taking so long and found him passed out in his tank. Luckily he had opened the rear hatch to get the grit out so they where able to snag his clothes and drag him out.

They must've missed the confined spaces safety meetings. I'm a water treatment plant operator and we also have 9 lift stations under our watch so we always pound home confined space safety.

That is why we no longer do O&M work. I do not want to deal with confined space and all the stuff it entails so those calls on pumps, floats and the like get referred to a company that deals with that.

Worked summers on a farm. Shoveled that lsast rotten grain out of a storage tank. Was sick for several days from the fumes.

Robb, you may recall from a few years ago the story of a wine maker who died while pushing down the "cap" on a stainless tank full of freshly crushed grapes that was fermenting away. CO2 isn't necessarily toxic but it will displace oxygen and if you pass out from it with no one there to revive you, well, that's the last vintage you'll see.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit Doug. A number of gases displace O2 in the bloodstream without us knowing it.

Had a co worker that would have died if his wife hadn't opened the garage door. Had car running to load test the charging system, hood strut blew out, hood dropped and knocked him out.
