One of my good friends gave me a S&W Outdoorsman as a retirement gift. Wonderful gun that I tried for a few years to buy from him. I want to shoot it and maybe even sneak up on a whitetail with it. What is a safe load that would work at close range(under 35 yds) for the gun. It is in great mechanical shape and was made just post war in 1948. I was planning on using a 158g SWC. Powder and load suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you are referring to the S&W .38/44 then it should handle up to +P loads. I use bulleye 3.0 grs for mild, 4.5 grains for a heavy. It's better to buy a loading manual and make frequent reference to it.

Great gun! Really top notch build and finish, especially on the pre-war and early post-war guns.
I've been really happy with Power Pistol and HS-6 in my Heavy Duty. The above advice about using a couple or more loading manuals is sound.
Have fun! -- Brian
