What primers do you guys use for the .500 JRH? I loaded up 200 rds with Winchester WLP which was one of the recommend primers from Jack himself. He warned me to never use Large Rifle Primers, Large Pistol or Large Pistol Magnum was the way to go. And of course, having just taken delivery of my BFR (pics soon) the manual says to never use Pistol primers in rifle pockets. I feel safe in ignoring this since Jack invented the cartridge specs.
What do you guys like to use?

Linebaugh primer pockets are also spec'd for LR, but I've never had an issue using LP (GM150M) in them.

I use Large pistol in the JRH. I believe this is common practice.
I'm using both JRH stamped brass and Starline 500S&W R brass.

Howdy Guys!
I joined the JRH club tonight by loading my first fifty rounds for a Magnum Research revolver I picked up a couple of weeks ago (special order). The most straightforward wildcat cartridge I have ever dealt with! I used pistol primers for these loads because I have previously loaded .475 Linebaugh by the original formula, making brass from W-W .45-70 brass. We all know that is rifle brass. I have always used pistol primers for the .475, and I have never had an issue with them. If I have any primer issues with the JRH I just loaded, I shall post it here.
Now here is a simple curiosity issue. Magnum Research's website indicates that they only build the JRH in a 5.5" barrel. The box my revolver came in says that it is a 5.5". From cylinder face to muzzle, mine measures 5.040". I am sure that I am NOT off by 1/2"! Has anyone else seen such as this? Oh, and I am NOT complaining, a 5" is fine with me. Just curious!

hghunter, Magnum Research measures from the front of the frame not from the front of the cylinder.

They seem to be all over the place with barrel length measurements.
My first 500 JRH MRI gun was marked 5 1/2" and is exactly that. The next one was also marked 5 1/2", but in reality it's 7 1/2".
I just bought a 475 Linebaugh PC gun and the box said it had a 3" barrel. It measures 5 1/4"...
As stated above, my factory 7 1/2" 454 Casull measures 8.2" since its measured from the front of the frame.
They are excellent guns for the money. Probably, dollar for dollar, the best revolver out there. But, sometimes like opening a box of Cracker Jacks or Forrest Gump's chocolates.

I would really like to know how they measured those barrels... Maybe they just eyeball it....through the bottom of a beer bottle.

I fired my first handloads using Winchester WLPs. All went well and the chronograph results were consistent and delivered what I had hoped. So far, so good.

Ref: Mic McPherson’s Book “Metallic Cartridge Handloading , Pursuit of the Perfect Cartridge”
Some real interesting primer information on Pages 105- 109.
Just a one quick example with the 30-06, Match Cases, 168gr Sierra Mk, 3.300” OAL
58.0gr A4350
Win WLRM 63.900 psi, 2,951 fps Win WLR 61,600 psi, 2,926 fps Fed 215 61,400 psi, 2,927 fps Fed 210 61,100 psi, 2,932 fps Alcan LRM 60,900 psi, 2,906 fps CCI 350 59,400 psi, 2,905 fps … … … … Win WLP 55,000 psi, 2,859 fps Fed 155 54,400 psi, 2,853 fps Fed 150 53,600 psi, 2,839 fps CCI 300 53,400 psi, 2,831 fps Rem 2 12….53,100 psi, 2,827 fps
The above were the top six and bottom 5 in Pressure and FPS – there are another 15 data points in between. There are several other tables indicating primer power and the CCI 350 is in the top six in them also.
Some of the lot numbers are date back to the early 70s and 90s (Federals 1970s and CCI350 1992), so who knows how much, if any, various primer specs have changed.
Food for thought.

I don't believe you'll see much difference in the 500 JRH when using rifle or pistol primers. I've used both and the accuracy was exactly the same relative to group size. Velocity was anywhere from 10 to 25 fps greater for the large rifle primer. SD approximately the same for both primers.
Here's a couple chronographed loads using 440 grain cast.
CCI BR-2 H110 30.00 1,368 SD-17
IMR4227 30.00 1,322 SD-4
N120 27.80 1087 SD-7
WLP H110 30.00 1,356
IMR4227 30.00 1,304 N120 27.80 1,075
