Boy, I sure don't get tired of looking at that one... Than looking at the pic of Elmer my mind starts to wondering. Sure would have liked to have had a chance to spend and afternoon (Or longer ) with Elmer.. Just to hear his stories, or maybe set and put some holes in a pop can, or whatever...

Mike, thats too bad you didn't get the dies when you bought the rifle. I've always regretted never asking Elmer if we could go shooting, I was young & I've said before I guess I was just intimidated, I'm sure he would have done if I had ask. I spent quite a few hours there in my 5-6 visits in the mid 70's. I do remember that rifle wasn't in the house when I saw it, it was out in his trophy room in back of the house, not sure why. The only gun he ever showed me in the house, besides the 4" 44 magnum he was wearing was an engraved single action Colt. He went upstairs & got it, wanted me to see the engraving, I think he had just go the gun back.

Nice that you were able to meet Elmer. I've talked to two men who were close to him and have nothing but great things to say about him. As far as I recollect from the auction, none of the guns came with dies. Not sure where all of that stuff went but Elmer must have had a treasure trove of odds and ends. The form dies for this caliber are a three die set which uses the sizing and decapping die as the final form die. You don't hear a lot about the Champlin rifles any more, but in Safari Elmer said they were among the best bolt guns he had ever handled.

Mike, thats really a bad break on the dies, you know they have to be collecting dust somewhere. John Taffin had quite a bit to do with getting the Keith collection moved to Boise & setting it up as you probably know. Also Elmer's son Ted had to know about each & every item Elmer ever had after he past. Its sure too bad the dies got seperated from your rifle. Would be interesting to even know the brand they were, Lacmiller, RCBS, custom, etc. Lots of history with your fine rifle. Not saying me & Elmer were friends, I just happened to stop in several times, mostly after an elk hunt & I would buy a book & have him autograph it, had my wife with me a couple of times, she liked Loraine. Once my brother & my Denist were with me.
