The biggest drawback in Elmer's day was the bullets, very few were reliable on big game in the 20's, 30's & 40's. I believe thats one of the main reasons he liked the really heavy slugs, they had heavy jackets & were more dependable than the light weight bullets at high speed, especially on elk. He always liked the Western Tool & Copperworks bullets & the Bitterroot Bonded Core when he could get them, they were always in short supply. Also what many people don't realize is that many times Elmer hunted elk in heavy timber where he was jump shooting them which meant a lot of times he was shooting at the south end of the elk & you needed a bullet that would break bones & penetrate up to the vitals. He was a meat hunter first & foremost, they seldom shopped at Walmart. Nice rifle, I've seen it in person a few times, both at his home & also at the Cabelas in Boise before they closed that part & sold off the guns.

Elmer liked the .338 275 grain Speer bullet in this one even though the 250 Nosler partitions were available. Not sure he trusted the newfangled bullets.

WOW, what a Beauty!!! It's a Great looking rifle, and just the sweeter knowing it was Elmer Keith's. How grand is that... I sure do love the octagon bbl, and the three leaf express sights are classy as can be, and regulated nicely I imagine...? Yes Sir, that is a Beauty! Thanks for sharing this. BigBore44 Mike is this yours? If so what POI are the sights regulated for?

It's mine. Not sure what ranges the sights are regulated for. They are marked 1, 2, and 3. Just recently took delivery of form dies and loading dies so should know soon how it shoots. Elmer said under an inch at 110 yards. Pop up front sight Extended top tang extended Elmer, Ross Seyfried and this 338/378KT with Elmer's last bull elk

I remember reading about that Champlin in Guns & Ammo magazine. Elmer had them do quite a few truly custom touches that made it his.

I've have three G&A articles by Elmer that feature the Champlin Haskins rifles, including this one. It's also discussed in Hell I Was There and Safari as well as mentions in the Gun Notes books. Elmer had three Champlin rifles: a 458 which was the first Keith Grade gun, the 338/378, and a wonderful 375 fully engraved by Frank Hendricks.

In the 60's I was stationed not to far from where the Chaplin & Haskins rifles were built but never made it over there, I never had enough money to buy a box of shells, much less a rifle. Elmer was also very fond of Iver Hendricks rifles from over in Montana, he had quite a number of them over the years as did a friend of mine, Ted Ransom. Wish you would get to shooting that rifle Mike!
