Hello I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the seirra 300gr jsp .shooting it from a colt.If so how was the accuracy at 100yrds? And if your willing to share what load did you use, powder, primer. Thanks for any input.

Sort of. I used those Sierra's in my .454 Casull and loaded 300 grain SPEER JSPs in .45 Colt. I loaded up .45 Colt +P loads for my SRH in .454 but I haven't shot them yet. I used Federal Large Pistol primers and 21.0 grains of IMR 4227. Not sure how this would fair in a standard .45 Colt, but it should be fine in a 5-shot version or anything capable of +P loads like my Casull SRH. I'll let you know how they do if you want, but I don't usually shoot as far as 100 yards with pistols.

I haven't shot them in my 45 Colt, but they are extremely accurate from my FA 454, I would not expect them to expand at 45 Colt velocities, they are very tough, I have shot them through 8" of knarley old juniper with no expansion at all.

I will be shooting them from a Ruger black hawk .on Sierra's web site they say for strong 45 colt or 454.I was just wondering I'll start loading them today.seirra reloading manual recommends mag primers with lower powder charge.hordnady and Hodgen have higher powder charge but use standard primers.Hodgen said they felt mag primers where not necessary.

I use Winchester Large Pistol Primers for standard or magnum loads.

They are considerably harder than the Hornady 300 grn XTP. I use the Sierra bullets for midrange 454 Casull loads, but haven't shot at 100 yards with them.

No jacketed but I did give the Goulds 330 HP a try. I forget what powder and charge I tried. Data was tough to find for it as well.

I have used them in my Bisley Vaquero (original Large Frame) and I can keep 6 of 6 on a large coffee can at 75 yards from field positions pretty regular but have not put them on paper for a group size. I do not recall off the top of my head what the load was, but I know it is from the Sierra manual likely near max.

Which Ruger Blackhawk do you have, the medium frame flat top or the large frame gun?
For use Only with large frame Blackhawks/Bisleys, 21-22 grains 296 with CCI 350 magnum large pistol primers.

To be honest I don't know , it's the standard Blackhawk ss,my other Blackhawk is blued but has interchangeable cylinders.it's not a flat top but as far as medium or large ? Blued gun I've owned for awhile SS just purchased 3 months ago it didn't say large or medium.

And if your willing to share what load did you use, powder, primer. Thanks for any input. Rather ugly bullet, a true Truncated Cone, small meplat and all. Accurate, yes. Alloy core hard as nails. In this shooter's estimation, a bullet of dubious utility in any revolver. Unless, one looks to poke a pencil hole in a big animal. Why would you subject a Colt to this bullet? Load it for Rocks & Dynamite and I reckon it could serve as an AP round in in The .454 Casull. David Bradshaw

Thank you Mr Bradshaw so even pushed to max velocity of the colt . you find it to be a poor in hunting performance. I am looking for a moose, elk bullet. But accuracy out to 100yrds is my bench mark standard.

Thank you Mr Bradshaw so even pushed to max velocity of the colt . you find it to be a poor in hunting performance. I am looking for a moose, elk bullet. But accuracy out to 100yrds is my bench mark standard. *** Many bullets sail inside six inches at 100 yards; nothing remarkable there. A revolver bullet taken afield certainly should group 5-shots into 4-inches from the length of a football field. Even if the revolver can't do that----and it should have that capability----the bullet must be respectable enough to interest a marksman or markswoman. To hunt with a frail-by-Ruger-standards Colt, I would bypass all jacketed bullets in favor of a cast lead slug (preferably powder coated) which departs the muzzle faster than a jacketed bullet within SAAMI recognized pressure. Despite the large case, it is easy to ramp up pressure in the .45 Colt. Bill Ruger looked closely at the pressure picture and in the early years limited production of .45 Colt Blackhawks, he was building Rugers, not Colts. David Bradshaw
