I keep seeing conflicting data. I may be making a mountain out of a mole hill also but this has always made me wonder..... What primer do you guys use for HS-6? Some data I see list a magnum primer then some data says standard primer. So what does HS-6 really require? I normally use a Federal large magnum when I use HS-6.

leftysixgun..... standard primer with HS-6, which is a medium burn rate handgun propellant. Mag primers are for slow powders, or hard to ignite environments. Standard primers tend to work very well with slow powders when the bullet is a heavy weight and possessed of the inertia to get the burn going.
I have used mag primers with fast and medium powders, reducing the charge slightly, and conclude it suitable for loading ammo when no standard primers are available. HS-6 is one of the best of all medium burn rate powders for a spectrum of straight wall cases. Haven't found an instance where I'd use by choice a mag primer to ignite it. David Bradshaw

Thanks for the question and the answers gentlemen. I've been wondering the same thing with 500L loads. 450gr over 15gr HS-6. Any data I can find shows CCI 350's. I think I'll try some 300's or some Fed 150's I have. But then again, the load shoots great with 350's. If it works don't fix it???

Ok, thank you. Have you heard of any issues with HS-6 being more difficult to ignite in colder weather?

I admit to not having near the experience that others on here have, but,I have used WLP's for YEARS and never thought twice. Then after the first Odumbfuck fiasco I spent a LOT of money collecting different primers. Long story short, I have,IN MY HANDGUNS,interchanged mag and standard primers and really haven't seen any difference. I spend my money on WLP's or CCI 350's.

Ok, thank you. Have you heard of any issues with HS-6 being more difficult to ignite in colder weather? Cold weather ignition is a non-issue with handholds and factory ammunition we've shot in deep-freeze cold down through 35-below ZERO fahrenheit. The ammunition spans lead to jacketed, light charges of fast powder to heavy charges of slow powder. Haven't experimented with combinations which shouldn't be loaded in the first place. +1 on the WLP primers. Seem to work well with most powders.

I have been load testing different bullets and powder loads with hs6.I have found no real benifit of using mag primers.bullet weight seams to improve standard deviation more than primer vs mag primer does.I have only tested 700 rounds over the chronograph so far so, I probably have less knowledge than others.hope this helps .

Powder Valley has WLP in stock, even with shipping and Hazmat fee(government robbery), they are still $2.50/1000 less expensive than my local gun store.
