Has anyone on here been successful on the drawing yesterday??
After many decades of donating my annual $50 to $60 to the AK Fish and Game coffee fund, I finally drew a good tag!!
Kodiak Brown bear for this fall.
I have always wanted a chance at a Really big grizzly. I have killed several with a revolver, but nothing over about about 8 1/2 ft.
The Kodiak and Ak Peninsula bears occasionally reach a size approaching the ancient cave bears. That is what I will be after.
It will be an all out effort on my part, as I doubt if I will ever get another opportunity like this. I am in my mid 60s. Judging by my lack of luck on the drawings in the past, I need to make the most of this one!!
I plan to use my new Freedom Arms .500 Wyoming. It is a 7 1/2" octagon barrel, and I will probably use a 400gr cast that I had Mountain Molds make for me. It is basically a WFN without a lube groove, and I powder coat them.

Best friends Dad got a really big female Brown there a few yrs back. When the tanned hide came home he opened the big box, and draped it over the couch. There was no more couch showing. Yikes ! Guide had told him it was the biggest female he'd seen in some time, but..guess he wasn't foolin' ! Congrats on the draw, and good huntin' ! Stay safe.

Fantastic! Congrats to you! I put in for 3 different sheep hunts. Both TMA hunts and a DCUA. Also Bison but no luck this year. But, I've drawn DCUA in the past, buddy and I got 2 rams that trip and my first ever sheep hunt I accompanied a frienc that drew DCUA. He got his ram and I got infected with sheep hunting. So I've been blessed to pack 3 rams out of that country. But another buddy of mine drew DCUA walk-in. I'm thinking about going with him. It'd be my sheep hunt for the year. No trigger pull for me but I got to do that last year.
So where is your bear tag? A buddy of mine accompanied another guy this past October and they took one on Karluk lake.

My hunt is in Spiridon Bay. I hope that my two buddies that were on last fall's moose hunt will be able to go. It will be very good deer hunting also.
I told them that they owe me a few trips of packing as I made 5 trips with Bob Bakers 71" moose!!!!
I also put in for the DCUA, I do every year along with TMA. I hope to get drawn before I am too feeble to get up the hills!! My wife tells me that I should be good for another 20 years or so!! We will be moving up to Delta in approx. 2 years, when her commitment is up with the Ketchikan Hospital, so I will be a little closer.
Just going along on some of these trips as a packer is fantastic, camping in the sheep mountains beats staying at home anyday!!!!!

Very true!!
I guess the many years of flying, hunting, guiding in Yakutat should be good practice for Kodiak!!
I used to get a kick out of folks that we would fly into some of the remote cabins on the Yakutat forelands, and they would wonder why there was 1" thick steel cables going over the roofs??!! I would tell them that the wind blew occasionally!!!

Good luck, I hope you whack the biggest bear up there, then you can call Bob Baker & tell him you need a hand. I know you don't need to pack out the meat but just that hide & skull is heavier than a deer. Congratulations! I'm guessing your 500 WE will work just fine.

yeh, I figure if I am by myself, I will end up cutting the hide in half to get it out. I am not going to risk packing out a 150lb load, that is for the younger folks.
Bob is really tempted to come up again this year, but I don't think he liked my cooking last year(freezedried)!!!

Congratulations. Look forward to a long and detailed report. I guess you already know today is the day to start getting in shape for a hunt that big.

Do you air cool then powdercoat and water drop to harden? I've read that powder coating softens them. Is that true? Perry
