Fixing to get a 2.75-in. blued Speed-Six .38 Special today. Only changes I'm planning a Tyler-T Grip, SS spurless hammer and looking for some decent leather.
Am I right in assuming the only difference between this revolver and one marked .357 is the chamber reamer?
Will it handle heavy .38 loads or should I just get a .357 cylinder for it?
Any input would be appreciated as would pics of your Speed-Sixes and accessories.
Thank you,
Dan

If you wanted a .357 why didn't you buy one? Just getting a .357 cylinder may not be all that easy and it must be fitted to the gun. The gun will handle full house Special loads of course. I don't have one but have the .357 sighted version, the Security Six with the same barrel in SS.

Sounds like you got an early gun! Nice ones,,, and to preserve the collectability of it,,, don't ream it.

NLC, Speed-Sixes ain't super common around here so when a guy offered me one at a good price I grabbed it. I would like the option of Mag case and cylinders are still available. Will probably run BB/Underwood HC/WC loads most of the time.
Rugers are overbuilt and will handle some Super-Vel handloads with aplomb, I suspect.
This will never be a Python-type collectible, just a shooter.
Another question: anybody tried putting as XS dot front sight on one of these? Or know of someone making new fronts to fit them?

It will handle about any sane 38 special you put thru it, and some that arent so sane.

In the ones that got away catagory, I had a Speed Six as shown with a super slick Ron Powers action job I would sure like to have back. Always reminded me of a modern Colt Lightning.

I saw a Ruger 95 front sight fitted to the Speed Six and it looked pretty sharp. IIRC the owner of that neat little heater bought an aftermarket front night sight from Trijicon, for the 95, and put it on the weapon might be something worth looking at.
Erich: great setup on that Six! All business, great little belly gun!

You are correct. I was issued a 4" .38 Service Six back in '85 as my duty gun. Been shooting Keith .38 loads of 13 grains of 2400 with a Lyman 358429. Chronographed at 1260 fps. Gun is just as tight as when It was issued to me. I wouldnt ream it, no need to.

I have had a Security Six .357 with the 2.75" barrel and pachmeyer grip filler same as Erich's gun for several years now. A great, great gun: tough as an anvil, smoooooth trigger, accurate and tight as new. Low recoil too, because of the weight. I liked it so much I hunted for a 6" until I finally found one last year - beautifully blued, too.
Now I want a 4" to make my collection complete.

Got the spurless SS hammer in Friday. Saved the owner manual in the computer and gonna look for you tube visuals today and drop it in.
Qualified with it last Monday for BUG/Off-Duty at work. Gonna have to wait a couple weeks on the Tyler T.
