If that gun in the pic is a 25-2 I'd bet big money the throats are too big. Might as well throw rocks.... It's a pinned gun. What type of stocks would be original to that gun? I figured some one parted out the old ones and gave it the new set to spruce it up for resale. Depends on the year it was made, but the grips look original to me. The "non-relieved" targets were in use in the early 50's, until around '55. They bring a lot of money too. Not quite as much as Cokes but still valuable. Dan

I have a 4" 25-5 without the pinned barrel, a 5" converted 38-44 in 45 Colt and a 4 3/4" USFA Rodeo in 45 Colt. I spoke to John about loads and have settled in to a few cast loads-all with standard pressures and able to be shot from any of the mentioned revolvers. One load is a 270SAA bullet at about 1,000 fps. I have an all-around load using a 255 grain bullet at about 850 fps.
John is quite right about the bulky grips. I haven't sanded mine down-wanting to keep it original should I ever sell it. I need to find a good source for N frame grips. Anyone know of one!

John Culina aka Kurac on the S&W forum does a nice job on S&W grips at a very fair price. I recommend him highly.

Kim Ahrends makes nice grips for Smiths. For me at least they really help to alleviate getting bashed by the hump at the top, in the web of the hand. Look good too.

With modern and even some not so modern powders, great performance can be had from the old 45 Colt. Rugers Midframed Blackhawks and Vaqueros has brought us some great loading data under 23,000 psi. For grips, I went with the Altamont Simulated Ivory. They fit unbelievably well and feel great in hand.

All this discussion got me to thinking about my S&W model 25-2. So, I went into my gun room, sat down with mine, and studied it a bit. It's a "45 cal Model 1955" in 45 acp. I used my pin gauges, and I came out with .454 throats. All I've ever shot in it is my 1911 match ammo which is loaded with a plated Xtreme bullet. never had any accuracy issues,,, and it's been quite pleasant. I guess that paying $482 for it at an auction a few years ago wasn't too bad.

Fired mine today. With loads assembled for another gun, it stayed around the 2" @ 25 yard mark. Not great, but lots of stuff to try in it.
Matt's 45 caliber wadcutter bullets will be here tomorrow. I will load and try them first.
I am well pleased with the gun so far.
