Ran into this one a few weeks back at a LGS. 45 acp . It's an oldie. Newer grips. What do you guys think of the price? Not that I'm up for buying it, too many other iron in the fire.

The one I ordered was NIB @ $886. I thought that fair, but not a great deal. It was just something I wanted and decided it was that time.

If that gun in the pic is a 25-2 I'd bet big money the throats are too big.
Might as well throw rocks....

I have a 25-7 in 45 colt. It is the 1987 model with the un fluted cylinder and 5 in half lug barrel. It is a great shooter with properly sized throats. Only short coming is the short front sight. It hits about 4 inches high at 25 yards with my 255 RNFP plinking load. My heavier 265 LFN gas checked load hit point of aim at 25 yds.

The revolver in the pic is a 25-2 in .45 ACP. Throats shouldn't be an issue. I picked up a 25-9 4" in 2003 for $400.00. Its a fantastic shooter. Throats are .453. My brother has a 25-5 that has throats ranging from .457 to .459. Its pretty pathetic unless he shoots swaged hollow base bullets.

Those 25-2 throats are notoriously large.
Believe what you want.
Only way to tell is to use a pin gauge to measure them.
As our own 2 Dogs has written, the cylinder throats must be "surgically" clean to get a correct measurement.
All else is based on experience and speculation.
I've passed on many because of this....

Picked up the gun today. While I believe how a gun shoots trumps measurement, I like both. Who doesn't?..
This S&W is absolutely wonderful in my opinion.
Barrel gap .0035" Throats .452" Chambers .483"
I can't ask for more. Range report to come.

I love the writings of John Taffin, and John Linebaugh too, but I was never brave enough to try hot-rodding my 625-6 Mt Gun like Mr. Linebaugh suggests in the first link posted. Those cylinder walls just looked too thin to me, notwithstanding the better steels mentioned.
I have no problem working up the Ruger Only loads we're all familiar with, as published by John Linebaugh, Speer, Sierra, Lyman and Hornady in a large frame Ruger. But I was always afraid of damaging my beautiful revolver. The hottest I have ever run a S&W 625 or medium frame Ruger is 13.5 grains Hercules Blue Dot under a 250 grain Gold Dot, and 13.0 grains BD under a 265 grain WFNGC.

Doug, I agree completely. I have several loads that push a 250 grn @ 1000 fps and stay about 16,000 psi. I will never hotrod this fine gun.

I have had a couple 25-2's over the years. Shot great with jacketed bullets. I always wanted to try the H & G #69 bullet. flat base version of #68. Anyway, my cylinder throats were big. I have a new 25-2 bbl. that I plan on putting onto a Mod.28 and re-chamber the cylinder. The price may be a little high, but there are not many for sale anymore. I always wanted a 1950 Target Model with a 4 in. bbl. The only one I ever saw in person had a 3700.00 price tag 12-13 years ago. No, I did not buy it, but I would have if I could have come up with the money. If you want it buy it!
