had my fabricator build me a new steel cabinet ( pigeon hole type ) big enough, & strong enough to hold all my bullets... ( when you load 75 - 80 different cartridges, you end up with a lot of bullets, & when you like big bore rifles & handguns, that bullet cabinet needs to hold a ton of weight... anyone that remembers the pictures of my gun room, the cabinet is at the paint shop, getting painted blue to match my other blue cabinets... will hold all the lead in the front set of holes, & have a storage area behind, to hold all of my powder library this is going to empty out a boat load of military ammo cans full of bullets, & get things sorted from 17 through 50 & get the last of the "gun stuff" out of the old reloading corner, which includes an old refridgerator my FIL had converted to store his powders in...these currently sit where MRS dad used to reload... that area has been scheduled to be walk in closet, since we built the gun room... once that corner is empty, it is going to make MRS very happy

Sounds like a heavy duty cabinet for sure! Should make organization better by the sound of it.
I noticed you said you load 17 cal, which one?

17 K Hornet, for a Contender... 17 Fireball, for a custom Remington 700... 17 Remington, for a Contender & a Custom bolt action rifle...
BTW... didn't think about it, but the background color in my avitar is the padded bench on one of my ammo storage benches, & that is the color blue of my steel cabinets

snapped a pic of the cabinet the other day... we'll see if I can make photobucket put it vertical again... ( uploaded it vertical, on bucket it was horizontal... tried changing it back on bucket... we'll see )

That's a cool cabinet and a great idea! I might have to borrow and modify that!

pssst... don't tell anyone, but it's actually on a humungus hinge, & is the door to my back room the level on top was to watch for plumb, as the weight was added... as the cabinet sits 1/4" off the floor, & all the weight is on a hinge on the left side... The front room is all antiques, revolvers & bolt actions, Holds the TV with digi antenna for storm coverage, a desk, 2 chairs, all our important paperwork ( since it's also fire proof, as well as storm proof )... the back room holds the Contenders, bolt action milsurps, the Czech rifle & handgun collection, & my semi auto rifles & handguns, specialty rifles, & shotguns... as well as provisions for several days, a couple cases of bottled water, & a larger 1st aid kit, as well as things like my battery storage area, & a bank of flashlight & emergency lighting... ammo is stored in storage benches, that the padded tops all come off, & form a bed, if for some reason we'd need to spend the night in there, due to bad weather or??? my thought here, since this is also our storm shelter, & I'd never know which or how many guests may be at the house in time of need... I wanted the front room, not quite as intimidating... MRS best friend saw it one day ( she's not really a gun person ), & was overwhelmed by the amount of guns... she was seeing both rooms... I figure if I can block off everything that is semi auto, ( & 2/3 of the total guns ) from view to non gun people, it might not be so overwhelming to those kind of people, in case they ever were in there... I'm now working on a lighter weight cabinet that will be similar ( less, but bigger holes... maybe just shelves ) that will fit in the doorway, behind the bullet cabinet, that will hold my powder library... this door opens out, the powder one will open in... that will complete my moving from the old gun storage & reloading corner in the house, that MRS would like for clothes, & make-up ( gotta keep momma happy ) we were over budget on this bullet cabinet, as the painter wanted ( after it was already painted ) almost as much as my fabricator buddy did for materials & labor, to build the cabinet... he did a nice job matching the color, & painting it inside & out, but neither of us was counting on that much cost to paint...

Very nice & well organized. My first thought was "weight!" I hope all is properly supported. I recently built an addition to my house,,, and one room is a gun room. Most my heavy bullets and loaded ammo is on the concrete floor. Lots of weight!

1/4" thick plates with a 1/2" pin, of full 6 feet of piano hinge bolted through 8" of concrete ( hinge plate extended 2.5" on the side that bolts to the wall, to give me stagger room for my through the wall bolt )... 10 - 3/8" hardened staggered bolts through the concrete... cabinet was built for this, from the start... 1 sheet of 3/16" steel, bent into side & back, & bottom ( extra strength bends added ) 1/8" opposite side & all the steel building the holes have extra bends to strengthen & stiffen the back & sides... I think I can hang on the side opposite the hinge, even with the cabinet full ( & I'm not a little guy )... all my loaded rounds & brass are in storage benches under the gun racks, ( visible lower right of the "fixed" picture below ) along the walls & all have a treated 2X bottom to keep any moisture from the concrete floor from transfering into the bench storage areas... all ammo is stored in plastic 50 & 100 round flip top boxes I've only got labels about 1/2 way down on the bullet cabinet, as I'm not 100% sure what calibers & weights go next... started with 17 caliber upper left, & working my way down to .510 in lower right... some bullets ( like my 45 Colt CAS bullets ) I need large enough quantity, that they may occupy 3 or 4 spaces
