Have a Ruger Redhawk ss 44mag that was a 7 1/2 barrel. Wanted a 4.5" and a friend that is a home gunsmith offered to cut mine down and install a wiegland front site for me. He did a good looking job and I was happy. Shot great till one day shooting some hot load the accuracy when bad. Checking out I found it to be leaded bad. So I cleaned it real good. Looking in the barrel I found a hole under the front base. Removing the base I poked a thin steel plug and lead out of the hole! He wants to buy my a new barrel but Seeing he did the job for free I will not let him! So I am looking for a SS Redhawk barrel. Anyone got one for sale, trade or give away!

Would taking the barrel down to 4 inches clean the situation up?

Never measured as it would be into the room markings.

Where is it leading? The usual place or at the screw hole?

Starts at the hole and spreads.

Thin steel plug? Was that in the hole too? Or rather was it hanging down in the barrel gouging the bullets as they passed?

I've seen holes drilled through into barrel channels that had no real effect on accuracy. They simply filled with lead and smoothed over, for lack of a better description. As long as the hole is smooth and doesn't have any rough edge hanging into the barrel, it should shoot ok/fine and not lead. Of course it's far from ideal, but it isn't the end of the world.

What he said. Is the screw hole on a land or in a groove? Put a new screw in, file or lap it flush on the inside of the bore and shoot it. Lots of shotguns have the front bead sight hole go all the way through.
