At the end of last year I was having the "I'm sick of my AR blues" which led me to selling a really nice Colt LE 6920 SOCOM and some accessories for a tad over $1,200. I was feeling like I wanted to start shooting a quality bolt action but also something really versatile that I would actually use for a variety of roles yet still allow me to take advantage of all of the AR ammo I kept. I had long wanted a CZ 527 Carbine and figured with the money I had from my sale I could buy a really nice scope and make this thing something I could be proud of.
Soon I had my CZ 527 Carbine in hand, it's light and fast to point, it has a 1:9 twist from an 18.5" barrel and are CIP rated for 5.56/.223. It has fixed open sights, included scope rings, a five round magazine, swivel studs, and a rubber but plate. It's hard not to love this rifle when you see it, it has a beautiful woodgrain stock with heavy checkering with a rubber butt pad, nice bluing, and a smooth bolt. The trigger is pretty light as is, but it has a "set" feature where you push it forward and it is scary light, great for distant shots.
Since its size feels so compact I didn't want to ruin it with a high powered scope with a huge bell, I wanted something that fit the feel of a brush and field gun that would still allow accuracy out to about 300 yards, so a quality compact scope was necessary. I looked at quite a few and decided on a Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4 power with a Duplex riticle, man that thing is clear. It has turrets which can be set to Zero, adjusted as necessary and then quickly reset. This scope pairs really well with this rifle. With this combo it is capable of about 1" @ 100 yds, I can live with that.
Finally I had my CZ 527 Carbine like I have wanted for years, I was actually able to set it up better than I probably could have even a few years ago. I'm kind of glad I waited since CZ is offering it in 1:9 now whereas a few years ago the Carbine was only available in 1:12... much better. I added a padded leather sling that fits the theme. I just stick an extra magazine and an ammo carrier in my pocket, put my S&W 617 .22 revolver on my hip and I'm off to the woods with a big grin on my face.
