Just watched a news report on Texas new open carry. Seen lots of 1911's in cheap plastic and nylon holsters. Somebody needs to edumacate them Texans on what a proper carry rig should be. Funny how when you read or see stories like these they always find the most ignorant folks on the planet. Kinda like tornados and trailer parks.

"Real" folk who carry know better. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on people who are interviewed for a spot like that. They are all show and no "go". Things will settle down in Texas when the law goes into effect..........just as it has in other states that have open carry, like Oklahoma. Don't see too many people doing it and those who do "look" as if they know what they are doing.

A sad fact of life is that most people get cheap holsters. That's what the local shops sell and the customers don't know any better and won't bother with the wait necessary for a good quality made to order piece of leather.
I'd bet most of the customers who buy leather from people like Barranti and Mernickle are in the over 50 age bracket, and their kids will spend their money on kydex and nylon.

The benefit to the open carry legislation, as I too often try to explain to people here in TX, is not to wear your sidearm on the outside. The benefit to open carry is that it is a defense against prosecution if you print or your shirt flaps open. I don't want people to know I'm armed. I want them to think everyone might be.

You nailed it. Today, day one, I was out and about, and saw only one gun, and it was under a coat and visible only when my buddy reached for his cup of coffee at the table. It's great not having to worry any more whether someone can make it out via printing or an inadvertent exposure of a grip or butt.

I use to make sure that when I carried no one could see it. Then I started to relax about it. Now I really don't care if someone sees me printing. Then again it isn't easy concealing a 1911. I still haven't gotten comfortable open carrying but in Indiana it doesn't matter as long as you have a license to do so. So rock on Texas.

This is a personal choice, not intended to be inflammatory, but the only time I open carry is in the great outdoors or when I'm on mine or someone else's property (with their permission of course). And when I write property, I mean acreage. Otherwise, I carry concealed (every day, along with my pants). I just don't see the point to stroll through the grocery store or my dentist's office with a hogleg hanging by my side. It makes me a target for the liberal loonies to squawk over, or worse, the first fellow a bad guy sets his eyes on. By nature I do not want to draw attention to myself, at least in this regard.
I do, on occasion, remove my vest or jacket at work and let all see my handgun, but then again I work in a pawn/gun shop and most folks coming in don't blink an eye.
No offense intended to anyone who does open carry, but I just see it as drawing needless attention. The last thing on earth I want is to have nervous policemen approaching me because they have a report of a "man with a gun". Whenever I've been pulled over while carrying concealed, the first thing I've always done is notify the officer immediately and politely. Never been an issue, I've always been thanked and never been harassed, but I'm of the opinion that the interaction between a cop and someone open carrying could be a bit more, um, strained.

It is a personal choice to open carry or carry concealed. Here in NC,,, we had OC long ago, and it wasn't as common to see. We also had a LOT of folks carrying CCW illegally,,, until the law changed.
I see both sides.
CCW allows you to remain unnoticed to the potential BG. The element of surprise. Plus,,, you don't alarm the liberal folks who live in a bubble of fear when you are out & about.
OC on the other hand does allow you to not be afraid of accidentally exposing or printing your CCW firearm. It also allows the potential GB who might be thinking of doing harm to re-think his victim(s). But for me,,, I've been going OC for a long time to help educate the general public. I often ask for managers or owners in places to express my "thanks" for NOT posting their business against firearms. By being polite & acting responsible, I show the non carrying public that gun owners are not to be feared. A big plus is that quite often,,, because I OC, we've had ladies approach us, (my wife & I,) & ask questions. As a result, we have gotten several of them in our WOT clinics. Bingo,,, new gun owners!
I have been in a few situations, that were potentially argumentative while open carrying. By being POLITE & CALM, it proved to the folks around me that just because I had a gun, I was not crazy nor going to use it. A good example. My friend & I went to an auto dealer where his wife had recently purchased a car. There was an accessory they were supposed to get that wasn't on it, & they were told to come pick one up. He came & got me, & we went to the dealership. He was CCW & I was OC. When we got there,,,, they didn't have to correct cover piece for his model available. He got upset, and was giving the salesman grief about driving 35 miles to get something he should have gotten & was promised. Some of the other salesmen were hovering nearby,,,,,, around me. I was calm & quiet,,, until the manager came out. After Danny was about to give up & had told them how displeased he was,,, I intervened. I CALMLY & POLITELY asked the manager; "By chance,,,, do you have any more models just like his for sale right now?" He replied he did. I then asked him; "Why not remove one of the covers off one of those cars & give it to him?" The mgr stopped, thought for a second, realizing I'd offered a valid solution, and told a salesman to get one off another car. Problem solved. While it was being done,,, the mgr thanked me for my suggestion, and said he appreciated me. A few minutes later,,, after all was calm,,, a comment was made about me & my gun & how the sales staff was watching me. A girl was told to keep an eye out & be ready to dial 911 if necessary. Danny looked at him & said; "Why were you worried about him? I'm the one pissed, and I'm carrying concealed. But I'm not so pissed as to illegally use my gun." The manager & staff were a bit set back. I used it as a teaching moment, to show them that while we both were carrying,,, did NOT make us crazy or anything. That even when upset,,, we were not going to shoot up the place over it.
We were thanked again.
Now, Danny is still pissed enough to never deal with them again,,, but we displayed a different attitude of gun owners to all of them.
So, OC can be a tool to educate & help our cause. Besides,,, we as gun owners have been made to feel "bad" about being gun owners for way too long by all the negative media. I CHOOSE to use it as a tool to help our cause. But,,, if I feel I'm in a spot that may be dangerous,,, mine goes from OC to CCW.
It's all about personal choices.

I'm currently in Texas, went to town yesterday, last night, and this morning, didn't see anyone carrying openly at all. This actually surprises me because a lot of people I know here have a concealed carry permit and before January 1 a lot of people around here who didn't have a permit seemed to believe that the law would allow anyone to carry openly now.
