I'm looking for a little help on dialing in my revolver. I've started with Beartooth's 265 grain Keith over 13 grains of HS6 and managed to consistently hit a pie plate at 25 yards.
If I'm going to participate in the 100 yard challenge, or hunt, I really need trigger time!
I was hoping to get the following before I order new components:
1. Bullet recommendation 2. Load for accuracy with intent to hunt 3. Explanation of the.45 Colt load sensitivity and how to deal with.
I know everything has to be tweaked to the gun, but I would like to get the most out of my shooting time and dollar and would like a solid head start.
Got some ideas?

John Linebaugh has a very informative article(s) on loading the .45 Colt on his website. I'd suggest you read it over a couple of times......

The Dave Scovill designed 45-270 has always shot well in my 45 Colt. In fact I whacked a javelin at near 45 yards with the 265 gr. HP variety of that very bullet not two hours ago. Loaded over 16.5 grs. of 2400 it's running somewhere in the 1050 fps range. The RCBS 45-255 has also been a very accurate bullet when loaded over 8.5 grs. of Unique and typically shoots fist-size groups at 50 yds. and I only shoot from a seated position. No doubt fired from a bench rest it'd do even better. For hunting I've been loading it over 13.0 grs. of Blue Dot and it too is more than sufficiently accurate. Before I grew tired of my New Vaquero, I was shooting 14.5 grs. of AA#7 with the 45-270 in a 285 gr, weight and it ran 1060 fps out of the 4 5/8" barrel. All that said, in my experience with the 45 Colt, you simply cannot go wrong with Unique. Other powders will give higher velocity potential, but if you're only poking holes in paper or shooting nothing larger than deer, a lot of velocity isn't really necessary.

I have.... Hence the 13 grains of HS6. I don't think he specifically mentions the bullet other than cast lead at 260 grains.

Thanks cholla.... I'm looking at getting the die you mentioned, but I haven't really dabbled in casting yet. Any recommendations for buying it already cast?

Thanks cholla.... I'm looking at getting the die you mentioned, but I haven't really dabbled in casting yet. Any recommendations for buying it already cast? Matt's Bullets casts the RCBS 45-270 SAA so you could buy it from him. If you even THINK you're going to get into casting, Midway both the RCBS moulds I mentioned on sale for $64.49, PLUS you can get a $10 rebate on both of them. That is a heck of a good deal and in my experience the RCBS moulds are the best commercially produced moulds out there. CHT

I have shot Matt's bullets 270saa with hs6 loads from 9.5 to 12.5 all shot well.I'm load testing up to 13.5, this weekend. The best group came at 12gr,SD was 11fps rem 2 1/2 primer.group was under 1 inch at 25 ,I'll test it at 50yrds Saturday. This is from a bench iron sight Ruger black hawk.

As far as accuracy is concerned, it has never failed(for me) that the most accurate loads for handguns are H110 loaded to 100% density with standard primers. That is assuming that the revolver has proper dimensions and your cases have proper neck tension. It's not a 5 shot only load, but it is more than I'd shoot in a Colt or clone.

I have had very good luck with the RCBS 255swc (about 268gr when cast of WW's) using between 18-20gr/2400 or 13.5gr/HS-6 in the full size .45 Blackhawk . Moving up in weight, the LEE 310gr FP GC is a great bullet , I like it with a full charge of H-110 in full size Blackhawks , works great in leverguns too.

The same 45-270 SSA boolit I used to cast did great in my 5 1/2" Bisley six shot .45 colt large frame over some HS-6. Id have to look at my notes for the amount of HS-6
