Have an original (circa late 1950s) Ruger 44 Flattop.
Want to shorten the barrel to the same length as the ejector shroud.
Was originally thinking of shortening the original barrel and replacing the front sight. Talked with a reputable gunsmith and by the time the gun is reblued will have about $500 in the barrel shortening process.
It has crossed my mind that perhaps there are other barrels which will match the Flattop's barrel threads.
Could I be so lucky that a current production New Model barrel would fit ? Could I find one without all the literature scroll ?

Hammer. Unless you are wanting the gun reblued anyway, ...there are ways to shorten the barrel and reset the sight that do not require it.

ALL RUGER .44, .41, .45, .357 HAVE THE SAME THREAD PATTERN; COLT 3RD GEN NEW FRONTIER AND SAA BARRELS ALSO FIT RUGERS. Could I be so lucky that a current production New Model barrel would fit ? YES Could I find one without all the literature scroll ? NO

Read my reply on R.F.
As JT states, the threads are the same but the length of the threaded portion is shorter on the OM's than it is on the NM's. Nothing a good 'smith couldn't handle.

You can find the pre warning barrels out there. I bought this one on GB for a NM SBH project.

$500 seems like an awful lot of money. The going price to remove a barrel and set it back one thread which entails a lot more work that cutting off and recrowning is around $100 to $150 based on the price lists that several gunsmiths post on the internet. Even with the work of remounting the front sight I would guess the price would be about the same. This is based on the assumption that your forcing cone, barrel to cylinder gap, and cylinder endshake are all good and don't need to be corrected.
