How about a British Black Powder Express cartridge? 450-400, 450, 500, 577 of various lengths. The 577 3" would be quite a kick in a he pants!

so I have a .375 Shilen match grade Barrel Blank of medium heavy contour... coming for this project, & ordered a set of 38-56 WCF dies... 38-56 WCF is now my 1st choice... I'd like to do the 375 JDJ... but at least around here, the 444 cases are impossible to come by... at the last gun show, I saw 3 bags of 50 new R-P cases, but they wanted a dollar a case, & wouldn't go for less at pack up time... the Starline 45-70 cases aren't the best to form 38-56 with, but I have several hundred R-P 45-70 cases I can replace with the Starline for 45-70, & use my R-P cases to form the 38-56... also the Starline 45-70 cases have been on sale, for less than 50 cents a piece... I'm pretty happy with this cartridge choice, from component availabity & what the cartridge should be capable of, out of a strong gun... it also keeps with my theme of older obsolite cartridges in my single shot rifles...
that will give me a range between my 2 Rolling Blocks & 4 Martinis of... 32-40, & 40-60 WCF on my Rolling Blocks, & 30 WCF, 38-56 WCF, 45-70 Gov., & 50-70 Gov. on my Martinis

thought I'd give you guys an update... metal work is over half done... yes the chambering is still 38-56 WCF... my buddy reinforced how nice an action this is, it's thicker & more true than any of my previous rifles... The barrel is now fitted & chambered, working on the extractor cut... working with Treebone Carving on wood thinking about going with quilted Maple... here is my 1st choice... quilted Maple... rough stock, wetted to show detail... this is his long range Creedmoor "What-Cheer" pattern an early target style stock pattern I'm now thinking about a receiver mounted aperture target sight & thinking about the butt plate... trying to decide if I want fancy or comfortable on the butt plate... if ya know what I mean any suggestions on side mount target sights??? thinking something similar to this... www.midwayusa.com/product/510077/williams-fp-deluxe-target-receiver-peep-sight-less-attaching-base-high-aluminum-black

We're converting a large Martini to .33 Winchester this winter (0.338" barrel). I look forward to seeing progress on your 38-56. Nice choice. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Well... the metal work is pretty much done ( polishing & bluing finish work will come later ) I did buy that piece of quilted maple & George at Tree-bone will be carving the for-end in the next week or so... now looking at front & rear sights, & will need to shape the lever to fit the stock... test loads have already been fired, without the stock, but I'll need to load a few rounds
anyone have a favorite load for 38-56??? BTW... have a custom expander made for cast bullets which is what I'm thinking I'll shoot in this rifle the bulk of the time...

so... the shaped fore arm for the Martini was too small for the heavier barrel... so we'll be shaping a beaver tail / semi beaver tail fore arm... I had to order a new quilted maple block for the fore arm... after traveling the wrong way, into California, & finally getting here 6 days late... the block did show up today... here's what it looks like in rectangular form...

I couldn't help but notice the several references to the 7-30 Waters. For a single shot rifle why not consider some of these:
6mm Bullberry 25 Bullberry 6.5mm Bullberry 7mm Bullberry
These were products of Fred Bullberry's innovations for the Contender and were based on the 30-30 parent case. Interesting performance.
Just a thought for something a little different.
