so I decided not to do the handgun with my pristine Martini action... so now I'm looking for suggestions for a chambering for a new custom rifle...
I currently have 3 custom Martini's... one in 30 WCF, one in 45-70 & one in 50-70... my 1st thoughts are 38-55 or 375 Winchester, but I'm open to suggestions for any rimmed cartridge that would fit in with what my other rifles are... thinking some vintage cartridges, that brass is still available ( like from Bertram or??? ) or could be easily formed from something plentiful...
your thoughts...

You seem to have the big game numbers well covered, how about an old style varminter? A 219 Zipper or Donaldson Wasp would be neat and there is plenty of 30-30 brass laying around.

38/55 is a good choice, but a 25/35 or a 25/35 AI would be fun and could be a real screamer

I have both the 25-35 WCF & 25-35 Ackley. While both are great rounds, the Ackley version is in a different class. In a 23" barrel 2900+ fps is easy even with modest pressures.
Would certainly give you something different that would work from prairie dog to deer.

A 32-20 would be cool, as would a 30-40 Krag. If you did decide to go the varminter route, the .219 mentioned above or Seyfried's 17/357 or 22/357 would be very unique but more suited to the smaller actions. I've always wanted to put together a custom Martini but have yet to take the plunge.

A farmer friend of mine has a Martini in 218 Bee Improved. 18" barrel and a 2-7X Scope. He carries it in a scabbard on a ginormous wheel tractor. He farms about 2,500 acres. I am impressed with the size and portability of the little carbine as he uses it to shoot coyotes. It's a tack driver out to 200yds and has survived years of use saddled up to a tractor in it's cab. Not crazy about the Bee cartridge but the Zipper and Wasp make a lot of sense.
Keep us informed with your decision and build, please.

What model Martini do you have? My first centerfire is on a Cadet action. Dad built it for me in 1980 using a Douglas barrel in .218 Bee: Years later he converted another one to .256 Win Mag. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

I foolishly passed on a Cadet model turned into a 17 Ackley Bee by P.O. Ackley himself.
I have thought several times that I should be examined.

Ya, anything by Ackley is a find. I'd probably kick myself over that one too. We have another Cadet and I'm trying to convince dad to do it in our .327 Meteor or .357 Max. Lots of options since they're flexible little actions. -Lee www.singleactions.com "Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

7x65R, the metric rimmed, more or less equivalent of the .280 Rem or 7x64 Brenneke. Or the classic .303 British.

LEE... this is a full sized action, so far mine are all full sized Enfields ( well one turned out to be a KP fake, which we rebuilt, reproofed, & chambered in 30-30, but stamped it's metric equivelent on the barrel, as well as "not Brit" on the top back of the action ) I always wanted a Cadet chambered in 22 K Hornet, but that hasn't worked out yet... so far I'm liking the smaller bore, larger case ideas ( Zipper & Wasp )... also thinking about 5.56 X 52 Rimmed ( 22 Savage ), maybe 25-20, 222 Rimmed... also 303 Brit, but since I already have a 30 caliber, the brit, & the original Cadet cartridge ( which is also interesting ) are at the bottom of the list... don't know why, but I think I want a longer cartridge on the full sized actions... would love to have a brace of Cadets, in 22 K Hornet, 218 Bee, & 256 Win Mag... BTW... the 357 Max is a good option, as I have a Dan Wesson, & 14" Contender in that cartridge already... most of these other choices require brass & loading equipment aquisitions as well

7x57R. Ones to mind. A wildcat of sorts I came up with, 256 maximum and or a 30 maximum. Neck down 357 max with 256 dies and the 30x221 dies. Use a full length 357/357 max carbide to full length size with. Have buddy that made up one in 22 some years back out of a messed up chamber 22 hornet TC barrel. He neck turned that one.
There are some interesting wildcats on the 303 Brit. The 7.62x54 is another good candidate that sees little use in this country. Can you see that I like rimmed cases on a single shot :-). Jeff
