I had a moment of downtime at work, so googled "gun states USA". Arizona came out as no. 1. Vermont was no. 2. I googled a little further and came to the conclusion that if I could choose, my next life would have to be in Vermont. Beautiful state - looks a little like Scandinavia (I am from Copenhagen, Denmark) - but none of that: "we will tell you whats good for you and prohibit the rest". It could also be a place where I brought my assets after a long lifes worth of hard work and retired - but I know my wife would veto that (possibly US immigration auth. would have an opinion as well)!!! A nice little place in the countryside... a few trees, a lake or a stream, and my own private gunrange... Hickok45-style. I like to dream Anyone of you gunslingers been to Vermont - or live there? Post some pictures of your favorite places and I will dream some more...... Carsten

Am quite happy in rural N.E. Ohio. My backyard looks like a smaller version of Hickcock45's. If you stay away from incorped city limit places, many states are OK.. Same for Penn.. or Va..or...

Alaska is a good one. No CC require but you can get one so as to have reciprocity with most other states. Also CC permit is stamped NICS Exempt so no NICS check required. No wait times after NICS approval. Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground.

No wait times after NICS approval. Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground. ...and no requirement for background check for private party face to face sales ...no silly laws against mag capacity, so-called assault weapons, etc. we also have an Immunity Self Defense Law to protect against civil law suits in the event you LEGALLY use defensive force. Alaska Statutes (A.S.)
Sec. 09.65.330. Immunity: Use of defensive force.
(a) A person who uses force in defense of self, other persons, or property as permitted in AS 11.81 is not liable for the death of or injury to the person against whom the force was intended to be used, unless the person against whom force was used was
(1) a peace officer, whether on or off duty, who was engaged in the performance of official duties;
(2) a firefighter, emergency medical technician, or paramedic engaged in the performance of official duties; or
(3) medical personnel, a health care provider, or a first responder in an emergency situation.
(b) The court shall award reasonable attorney fees, court costs, compensation for loss of income, and all expenses incurred by the defendant in defense of a civil action brought by a plaintiff if the court finds that the defendant is not liable under (a) of this section.Oh.... and we also have 40 below

Up until the ignorant masses fell for a feel good do nothing initiative called I594 a couple of years ago, WA state was still a good place. Still is as far as it goes. We have a strong pro gun ownership state constitution, its a preemptive state wherein state law has the last word on gun laws, we are a "shall issue" state on CC and have reciprocity with a number of states. No restrictions on what guns I buy or mags or amount of anything. No licence required for ammo, no registration on guns other than at purchase of course. Its good, but not as good as a few others, but there is lots worse too.

In fact, it is much easier and cheaper to get a CC in WA than here in AK. I know, I've done both. Here you are required to take the NRA course which is 2 days and $150 but the local instructor (Joe Nava, yup NRA Joe Nava) sends you home with the paperwork, picture, finger prints etc. You take it to the Troopers, cough up another 95 bucks and wait a month or so. It took me about 10 minutes a few weeks ago in Seattle at a local Police Dept. I walked in, showed my AK drivers license, filled out a form, gave em 50 bucks, they took my picture and digital fingerprints and I was out the door. It takes about 60 days for it to show up. And then there's Oregon. No reciprocity with AK, no non-resident issuing of CC. WA makes you register your guns that you buy from an FFL?? The state keeps track??

Yes, that is what's been going on for some time. When you buy a gun thru a dealer, the state keeps all records of the transaction including buyer and gun info. Its illegal but they do it anyway. The govt here is very liberal for the most part, witness a total moron for Guv, Jay Inslee, a real POS! Oregon does issue permits to WA CC holders I believe, as I know a couple guys that went down and got theirs. I don't really care about reciprocity, most times I am heading due east and I can carry legal thru ID and MT and even SD I think, and WY. I don't much care to go anywhere else. WA is also an open carry state, but its not often seen, though recently I was in the store in my little seaside town and my boy said hey that guy is carrying! Had a 1911 on his hip in full view. Spent lots of time up north years ago, don't really miss it that much, though I may take the ferry up some summer just for fun. Years ago when I lived in Seattle it was a real PITA to get a CC in Seattle. They were really snotty and asked why you wanted or needed a license even though its a shall issue matter, they cannot refuse unless something pops up in your background check, but they tried to discourage guys from getting the license. Where I am now about an hour north of Seattle in Skagit Co, I go in to the Sheriffs office and its done in minutes. Biggest controversy I had on my last renewal was what color to call my hair, brown or gray! I put both on the app, and the gal said I could only choose one color, so I took off my hat and said "well OK, you tell me what color it is". She laughed and said "you get to be brown one more time".

Pa might be up there we passed a castle law here a few months ago, now its legal if you shoot someone in your house stealing things that you worked your but off to have. We have concealed weapons permits and a right to carry law along with legal, but not wise , just like Pancho for all the world to see carry. People are still gun stupid and shy and the best way to meet the fine folks in law enforcement is to hang it on your hip and go for milk and a newspaper.

Of the state's that I know the gun laws, Vermont is good. NH is good, and Alaska Has to be about the Best imho...?
Vermont doesn't even have a CCW Permit/License, just carry it and go about your business., Smartly!
NH is open carry for non-residents and non-license holders. For a small fee residents get a CCW, and for non-residents it's $100 for 4 or 6 years (I don't remember right now)
I remember reading that a couple places in PA were very easy & quick to get your Non-resident CCW permit. Does anyone here know what town that's in?
Thanks BigBore44

Are you sure Castle Doctrine law protects you from someone stealing stuff? I know here in AK it doesn't. It is specifically for defense of life. Same with our Stand Your Ground Law. If some teenager is stealing my 4-wheeler the law won't protect me if I kill him. Now, if he points a gun at me and says give me the keys to your 4-wheeler, it's a different story. I don't want to kill some kid to keep him from stealing stuff anyway, it's just stuff. Life is life. Just my opinion

In WA state, if a person is inside my house in the middle of the night uninvited, its legal to shoot, as it should be. Not outside stealing my car mind you, but inside the home. How do I know he isn't there to kill my family? He should be shot on sight and here it is legal.
