I bought an Alaskan a while back with the thought of turning it into a 45 Colt GP44 with a 5" barrel. I went that route due to what I read about the trigger on the SRH.
Now of course, the 4" Redhawk is an easily obtainable commodity, and it can easily digest heavy 45 Colt loads. Should I reverse course and get the 4" Redhawk, tune the trigger and be done?

I have the redhawk 4.2" 44 mag and it's just a beast of a sixgun. That said, the SRH would be all that and more.

Do what's best/easier I'd say...
I have to ask though (I might need some sleep here) what is a 45 Colt GP44??
Thanks BigBore44

It's a chopped Alaskan with a Redhawk Barrel. SRH Lockwork on a more petite platform than a 100% SRH.

Not to mention a much more friendly grip arrangement.

And I see now that they have a 4" that has a recessed cylinder to accept moon clips in order to shoot 45ACP - from the factory!
I would still rather have a 5" barrel, but it is really tempting.

Lots of RH fans here... My primary RH experience comes from the early years of the RH. The DA was fine out of the box but the SA was nasty. The single trigger return/hammer spring in the original RH action made working the SA tricky. As a result of my experience I don't do the RH platform. I like the SRH action and grip mounting but it is a bit larger than necessary. That said I do own 44/454/480 SRHs. Bowen's trimmed up SRH has always looked good to me....

Now if Ruger would go and sell that, I imagine they would push a bumper crop of them out the door.
I would surely have at least one.

Yup...if the factory offered that I would have bought it, no question. As it is, it is looking more and more like I will send the Alaskan down the road and pick up a 4.2" 45 Colt/45 Auto.

Yes , I like that conversion. Milling the top strap to remove the rear scope mount cuts is interesting. Do you have another picture of the top strap area from a different angle. That would make a cool project.

Interesting , so,how does one remove the barrel from the frame extension so the extension can be milled down to the RH contour /length to fit a RH barrel? I would love to see a "how to" on the conversion. To bad Ruger does not make one that way in the first place. I much prefer the SRH system.

The snout is cut off first, relieving the tension on the barrel, then it turns right out (from what I have been told).
