I'm still resisting a black rifle-maybe because I carried and used one in Vietnam. I prefer the lighter weight of the older M16 platform.
Also thinking of trading in my pre-war 94 for a pre-64 version that's drilled and tapped-would look at getting an older Lyman aperture sight for it. Not convinced that I need or want a scoped rifle.
I like the lighter weight of the M16 and 94.
Still researching and visiting gun shops to see what's on the rack. I'm in no hurry-it's part of the fun!

I like the lighter weight of the M16 and 94. A lightweight AR is very doable. I have serious plans for my next builds to be a 6.8 and .450 Bushmaster. Both will be 18" and neither will be a lightweight but they won't be like humping an M60 or M249 either (BTDT with both).

If money isn't an issue you can send a ranch rifle along with $800 to Accuracy Systems and get back a guaranteed 1" semi-auto, and you can get it in any number of 223 based rounds. I have no affiliation with them, just have found their offerings very interesting.

M16A1 and M16A2 profiled AR's are available and weight is minimal. And as you stated you carried one in Vietnam. It may feel like an old friend. I would never be without one. Muscle memory has removed any thought process.

I have a Mini30 that gave me fits accuracy wise but worse it would walk bullets right off a target as it heated up. Problem was solved with a Ultimac scout mount and IER scope. Now groups 1.5" with Cheetah ammo and a 2-7 Burris scout scope...
Mine is stainless/synthetic and about as tough as it gets. Had it out last week and had no problem putting 5/5 on a pepperpopper at 200 yards sitting with a sling...
Don't know how well the new guns hold zero with a receiver mounted scope but there are just too many pressure points along the barrel. As the barrel heats up the receiver and scope are still looking at the target and the barrel warps off target. The M14 does the exact same thing...
Very happy with mine...Bob
ps...if you don't need/want a scope the Mini is just fine as long as you don't feed it JUNK ammo. Junk in...junk out... When I shot Wolf groups were in the 4" range...with Cheetah...1.2".

How about an old Remington 742 semi-auto in .30-06 or .308? I just bought one on Gunbroker (my 2nd) for $215 in decent shape. There are others that are in the low $200 price range. A "sleeper" if you asked me. You can get 10 round mags for them if you want to "Rambo".

Toroflow, that's a great suggestion. My uncle hunted with a 740 (?), and my dad hunted with a 760, both were in 30-06.

Interesting-I have more research to do. A .308 would be fine.
But, heavier than I'd prefer.

though no longer made and priceY the heckler and Koch SL7 in 223 has the wood stock, compact size and very reliable, about 6 pounds weight. they made a 308 model as well. these are accurate and reliable, though likey expensive now. I also had the HK 770 sporting version semi auto 308 and it was superb, also had available 10 round mags. again this is pricey now.

I have a Ruger Deerfield Carbine .44 mag. Stock peep sights, shoots great, 4 round mags, short and handy! I wish my father would kept a Ruger 96/44 he had 10 or so years ago. I'd love to have that puppy now.
