I was becoming interested in a Ruger Ranch rifle until I read some posts here. I am looking for a a solid, lightweight, kick around truck rifle in a suitable caliber-.223-.308. But, I am not interested in one of the black rifles based on the old M16 or newer M4 platforms.
Is there such a thing? Any thoughts?
Currently using a pre-war Winchester 94 in 30-30. Its an ideal package for length and weight, but I would like to be able to use other sights and am unwilling to modify the 94.

www.leverguns.com/articles/thunder_ranch.htm Read this article before you decide to get rid of the 30-30 totally. If you do not want to modify the gun you own then consider getting another and set it up like you want. Express sights and the XO sights, Peep Sights, several alternatives to the old buck horn sights. There are many modern lever guns in pistol calibers, if you so choose, but the 30-30 can shoot a lot farther than most people imagine. Paco Kelly has writings on the 30-30 that will keep you busy for awhile. Get a Marlin so as to allow the choices,( of sights) usually easier to install, than a 94.

Thanks for the advice!
Was/is there a Marlin lever action carbine made in 30-30 with a straight stock?
Knowing that manufacturers made changes to their products over time-not always to the best-what is the preferred vintage to find?

Yes they made a Marlin with a straight stock, sometimes called a Texan configuration. You might also look at a CZ bolt rifle in 7.62x39, CZ 452 I think, also available in 223. I have one it us accurate, short and easy in and out of a truck.

My new Mini 30 in 300 Blackout is shooting well. Groups 1 1/2-2" with loads it likes.
Very handy and fast handling rifle.
The old Minis I tried usually printed 4"+ groups. So far I am impressed with the improvements Ruger has made.

And of course I think you should reconsider the black rifle. I have them in lots of calibers from .204 up to .458 and they are every one very, very accurate. The .204, all the .223s and the .25 WSSM are 1/2 MOSor better shooters.

I don't have any feedback or reviews of them, but maybe one of the recent production IMI built versions?

Thanks.
The M1 Carbine could be good-anemic cartridge though.
Looking, still, at Marlin 336's in 30-30.

I'd just throw one of the more affordable AR15/M4's in there. I see them for less than $599 sometimes. Easy as pie to add an optic of any size or type.
But if you don't like those, you could go M1A, M1 Carbine, lever action, etc. Maybe a Savage 99 in 250-3000, 300 Savage or 308?

You can get an AR in .243 & .260 too. And 6.8 or .300 Blackout if you want to stick the with "short action" AR and the .300 is touted as the semi-auto .30-30 in some circles. There's even a .30 Herrett barrel. If only I was independently wealthy with scads of free time...
