Can a person safely fire a 22 LR in a single shot rifle marked 22 Magnum only ?
Specifically an Ithica M 49 22 magnum

I wouldn't recommend it. The Long Rifle is considerably smaller around. I do regularly use 22 WRF in my Stevens/Savage 22 Magnum single shot.
I have a ton of the WRF I bought on clearance for $4 a box. They shoot just fine in the Magnum chamber.

I've done it before but, like mentioned the 22LR are smaller dia., and I had them bulge & split. Accuracy was Non-existent....

I've been curious about this from a different angle. I absolutely get that the case is a larger diameter, etc. But I have to wonder about, specifically, colibri and super colibri (but mostly colibri) 22LR in a 22 WMR cylinder. Seems like it should be safe enough to try, just to verify accuracy...
I wonder how much the case really rattles around in there.

I have a bad chamber in a Win. 1902 22 LR. Standard vel. cartridges/CB's tend to expand but don't split as do high velocity offerings. YMMV

I inadvertently did it as a kid for years. My dad had bought an old model single six from a guy.The guy said nothing about it being a 22 mag. I think I shot that thing for 10 years before I realized it was a mag.

The cases would bulge and sometimes split. No you aren't suppose to but it can be done.

There was a company that used to make an adapter that would allow "safe" use of LR rounds in a WMR chamber. Being a bit of a tinkerer, I made some from WMR cases with the base cut off t other point you could shove a LR case into it from the back. They shot, no split cases, accuracy was ok for any emergency as I recall, and you could reuse the "adapter" once or twice more, but you would need something to punch out the LR case.

Trapr MC Ace made those adapters....I have some......also I have done the cut off case as you have, works ok as well.

I did it for a long time as a kid. That exact same gun was my first- handed down to me when my grandfather passed. I shot a lot of .22 lr out of it, but I had to use a brass rod to knock the cases out because they wouldn't extract. My father sent it to a gunsmith to get looked over, and it still wouldn't eject spent cases... Years later, I finally read the side of the barrel where it clearly stated ".22 WMR". Put some 22 mags in there and viola! I have since picked up a M49 in .22 lr that shoots and ejects without a hitch.
