Hello All,
I'm reaching out to ask your feedback/suggestions on a front sight option for a Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 Mag I'm having cut down to 5 inches. (Also any wisdom you'd suggest on the 5" length vs. any other length is appreciated). I was originally going to have my gunsmith reuse the front sight but I was having issues with its height while sighting in the revolver at factory original 7.5" (rear sight bottomed out and still shooting too high). I was going to purchase the higher Ruger SRH front sight shown on their website (.610 high) but thought that may even be too short.
I got to thinking that after the barrel is cut, I don't necessarily have to go with the same shaped Ruger front sight base and could use a differernt option like the dovetail style front sights on the other Ruger revolvers, or possibly something else. Any suggestions on what to do here? If anyone here has done something similar and you could share a photo of the front sight you used, that would be greatly appreciated!

First off get a sight base that you can interchange blades. Without knowing what you are going to be shooting that is a little more than a guess for me. If you are shooting a 310 grain at about 1325 FPS it is going to shoot a lot higher than a 250 grain at about 1000 FPS I think you understand this.. The XS Express sights are good for when there is low light, because you see a white front sight. Some people want a black Blade. that is up to you. Jack Huntington put a base on my 45 that allows me to change blades. I believe that the ability to change front sights is a must. I can't post photos.

I agree with Cherokeetracker. Reeder finished my new Ruger SBH 480 yesterday. The first thing I asked for was an interchangeable front sight system. There is so much debate over which sight and height is best that interchangeable is the only way to go.
Have a small plastic tackle box full of front sights for target, hunting, & express. The same blades work on my custom Rugers and Freedom Arms.
The Ruger SBH 454 Casull goes next for the same treatment.

Thanks gents! I also answered my own question: called the expert on all things revolver, Mr. Bowen, and have a DX front sight base on order which will work wonders. He said that the Blackhawk one is actually what is needed to closely match the contour of my barrel.

Yes the DX !! I could not think of it earlier. You are going to really like the 5" length barrel on this Gun. It has a nice balance to it.
