I'm planning a trip to TX for my nieces wedding... we're driving down from MN... I don't get away from home much anymore, & the last time I headed to TX, & I checked, I thought TX & MN had a reciprocity agreement, but in checking before this trip, looks like I can carry my whole trip, until I get to TX, but not in TX... something has changed since my last trip???
any of you Texans know if it's legal to move the gun from my belt to my console in the truck, or if I need to unload it & have the ammo in a separate "place" than the gun, like I used to have to do in MN before I got my CCW
it'll make a difference what I carry, as I don't have a speed loader for my 351 PD... ( lil 22 mag is my daily carry right now ) if I can't keep a loaded weapon in my truck, I may end up bringing my 396, as I could at least load it quicker with speed loaders... the 44 special holds 2 less rounds but I shoot it well, & it also carrys nicely
thanks for any info & or insight you can offer...
in hind sight... maybe I can't carry concealed but open carry in TX???

well I don't have a carry license yet (I plan on getting one when I have the time) but as of now I can legally carry a loaded handgun in my truck for the purpose of self defense without having a license. it just has to be concealed. this can be in the center console or on the front seat under a news paper. it does not matter as long as it is not visible. I believe this law is called the motorist protection act. i'm not sure if it applies to out of state residents though.
we did pass an open carry law this year but it doesn't take effect till January 1st (may be later than that, i'm not certain) but i believe you have to have a Texas CHL to do so.
hopefully someone with a little more knowledge on the subject will chime in.

From the horse's mouth Peaceable journey laws? Yes Yes PC 46.02, PC 46.15 A person may carry a loaded handgun without a permit while in or heading directly to a motor vehicle or watercraft they own or control. The statute does not specifically state the handgun must be concealed while heading to the vehicle or watercraft, and 46.02, which requires concealment of a handgun while in a motor vehicle or watercraft, is not applicable to a person while the person is traveling, pursuant to said activities. 46.15(b)(2).

If you should happen to get pulled over, give your CHL to the officer along with your Drivers license. That is telling him you are armed and of course answer any questions politely and always keep your hands in plain sight. The first is a requirement of Texas CHL holders and would be taken well by an out of state carrier. The second part I have just found makes everybody less nervous and they appreciate it.
