I was prepping brass for a forthcoming new .45 pistol when upon trying to prime some Speer brass, it wouldn't take large pistol primers. Thinking it was an oddball, tried another, same result. I have nearly a box and a half of this brass that was cut for small primers. Anyone else run into this before? Would a std small primer be OK for this or should I use a mag primer to make up for the smaller size?

Yup, they've been around for a while now. Pain when they get mixed in on the progressive. I set them aside when I come across them and use them for field loads where I don't want to go searching for the brass. Regular small pistol primers work fine.

Several years ago, Federal, and some others came out with the small primers in their Lead free ammo. The primers do make a difference in the loads. I toss them. Since I never used them I do not know if they make much of a difference like rifle brass does. ( Heard that they didn't ) I doubt that it would different in a Target load. You will not need a magnum primer. There is a few forum members here that can vouch for using WST for Target loads. It seems to ignite better and perform better in colder weather. So I would go with that combo if using a small primer. Try 5-10 first and see before loading a bunch. Example: Hornady came out with the small rifle primer in the 6.8 SPC and Remington had the large primer. Hornady stated that the small primer was used because of pressure. Long story short Remington had the chamber wrong thus so many people reaming their rifles and all the new ones coming out with new chamber and we have the 6.8 SPC !!! All that bull just to tell you that now, there is a difference in the loads with the small primers VS the large Primers. POI and POA is different, as well as velocities.

Thanks for the info guys. I will probably do as you, load them once and leave them. I don't have any WST but have some Bullseye etc.

My general purpose 45 ACP loads are with 231 and PB. I haven't noticed a difference between small and large primers.

It's real fun when you run into these on an AmmoLoad machine.
