Why have Colt double action`s gone up in price?? Just reading some auction house info showing the numbers for Colt`s sky rocket. Had a case made for my Colt Python and Diamondback 22lr. A friend in Idaho has a chance at serial #174 Python for $1700. Should he get it???

Depends upon condition and his degree of lust. I had only one- a new 8" version in the early '80's. It was accurate, but a real spitter.

If the gun is in any kind of shape at all and is truly a 3 digit number then I do not see how he could go wrong at that price. Try to find ANY python for under $2K and see what you come up with.

It's getting to the point where any Colt Python under $2000 is a good buy. I can understand the attraction, but I'd be hard pressed to pay that much for any Python made after about 1960.

Okay, since "snakes" are the subject I will interject a story of Robb Barnes stupidity at the risk of getting through into the Hi-Jack thread and in an effort to let everyone who has made a crazy gun trade feel better about themselves. Years ago I started collecting Browning B-78 single shot rifles after I inherited a 7 Mag from my father. When I started thinning the single shot herd a man offered to trade me a brushed stainless python with some other custom shop upgrades for one of the Brownings. The python had the original box and paperwork so I made the trade. My oldest son really enjoyed shooting that gun with mild 38s and in fact when he graduated from the Air Force Academy and I offered him one of my guns, he asked for the python. Well, here comes the dumb me part. When Ruger came out with the stainless Hunter model in 41 I was in the midst of my 41 fervor and had to have one. A very well known Ruger collector back on the east coast had one for sale and I "had to have it!" so I offered to trade him the python for the bisley hunter in 41. Yep, I offered and he did what any smart gun guy (excluding myself) would do, he took the offer. You know as soon as I held that hunter gun in my hand and felt how heavy it was and how stout the barrel contour was I knew I had made a big mistake. Unfortunately by then the gentleman had already sold the python which I was willing to buy back at whatever price he wanted but by then the gun was already gone into a Colt collectors home. Yep, that is my best story/worst case of gun trading stupidity! Robb

Robb,
Most of us can relate to your experience on a personal level. Simply put we have done very similar trades. I just chalk it up "That's life".

Yep, I've done my share of dumb gun trades...
James, other than the fact that none of the Colt snake guns are made anymore, I don't know why they command such a high tariff. I will say that I am in possession of a 4" nickel Python that is unfired (for the time being) that I received after the death of my dad. The cool thing about this one is that I actually bought it for my mom to give to him for Christmas in 1980. I was working at a gun store back then and the price was a whopping $400 which was a lot for a gun back then - I won't sell it for any amount. I do plan to shoot it at some point. He also had a Cobra that my sister got...
