what are your favorite 45 colt loads and bullets for hunting?
after seeing a really big buck the other day I got the sudden urge to start hunting more often with a revolver. next week i'll have one of the new super Blackhawks in 454casull/45colt (I will just be shooting 45colt) and would like some good accurate loads for deer and hogs.
feel free to post up buffalo and elephant loads too. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)
many thanks! Zane.

my most accurate load out of all jacketed and cast bullet loads for my stainless bisley .45 colt is a speer deep curl 300 grain (.454) with a moderate charge of h-110 (would have to look at notes for exact load). it cuts 1 inch groups at 25 yards. have not tested it on Iowa white tail yet though

In the past I had a good, accurate load with a CP 335 WLNGC in 45 Colt brass with a CCI350 magnum primer and 22 grains W296. But I don't really think a load that heavy is necessary for deer unless you're shooting longrange and I wasn't so...
I went to a 250 rnfp, or 255 SWC, or the BT 265 WFNGC with 12 - 13 grains of Blue Dot. I also really like the 270 SAA bullet at around 1,000 fps.

Taken many deer and a cow elk with the humble Lyman Keith 454424 over 20 gr. 2400, sparked by a WLPP. From my 7.5" Bisley I get and average of 1233 fps. Never recovered a single 260 gr slug.

I've shot 3 deer with the RCBS 255-K (solid and HP) cast of 40/60 lead/wheelweights over 9 gr.s of Unique. Runs about 975 fps out my 4 3/4 Flattop in the summer, not sure about the winter. Solids go clean through leaving a good size hole and HP's usually end up under the hide on the off side.

The Keith bullet at 260 grs. or the Miha bullet, a bit heavier with 18.5-20 grs. of 2400 is a great place to start on deer size game & as Tank mentioned is a one shot stopper on elk with good placement. I've taken lots of deer with 18.5 grs. of 2400, never recovered a bullet but recovered every deer! 9 grs. of Unique is my everyday summer load for badgers, squirrels, rock chucks, Utah fishermen & snakes ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Another like time favorite of many 45 shooters is 20 grs. of 4227 with a 250-260 gr. slug, many Silhouette shooters liked that load. If you have to shoot top end loads switch to H110 & bump up to 300-325 gr. slugs & nothings safe. I've taken 3 elk with 325's & all were pass throughs using H110 & magnum primers. If your sixgun is throated properly its pretty hard to top a good 45 with quality cast slugs. Any caliber can be "over" bulleted, that is, you can go too heavy & then its time to move up to a bigger gun/case like 454, 480, 475, 500, etc. For me at least in the 45 Colt its somewhere around 325-340 grs. others will disagree, but in a six shot gun you can only go so far with heavy bullets. A good hunter with a good 45 is very well equipted. Dick

I run 8.5grs up to 10grs Unique over a 255-260gr cast for 98% of my hunting.

I dumped a 200lb hog with a 300g Speer jsp over 23g of W296 out of my 7.5" Bisley .45 colt. The shot was quartering away and the bullet went in behind the left shoulder and out behind the right ear. The shot was 70-75 yards, it went all stiff legged and fell over. I think that bullet will shoot through almost anything you care to point it at. It may be over kill, but I think "overkill is under rated". The 300g XTP's shoot well in my gun also, I've killed a couple deer with the .44 version. No bullets recovered and good blood if they moved (30 yards max).
