Not a typo. I just picked up a real nice 6" Highway Patrolman. In the box numbered to the gun. When I was entering it into my A&D book I noticed the model number looked a little funny. Since age is taking its toll on my sight I had to have my partner confirm what I was reading. The frame is stamped 29-2. Anyone run into one before? Rare??
I will post pics later.

Hi Gary. You might contact S+W for this one. Just speculating, but it sounds like a re-barrel. I had an S+W 357 4" Highway Patrolman some years ago. My model weighed 41 3/4 oz unloaded. Sure was accurate out a little ways past 100 yards though. Owned it for 13 years, before I stepped up to a Ruger SBH 44 mag. Hope you find your answer.

Check the numbers from under the bbl against the number on the bottom of the grip. A rebarrel wouldn't be my guess, as the barrel profile of a Highway Patrolman is nothing like the profile of a M29, and it wouldn't come with a numbered box.
See if you can get a loupe to check the model number; sometimes the edge of the "8" is lighter than the rest and looks like a 9 or a 6. Less common with S&Ws than other brands, but you never know with those late 60's guns. -- Brian

I had 3 different guys look at it and all agreed it was a 9. I havent checked the barrel number but the box label, frame, and grip all match. The finish is not the high polish of a 29. Looks like every 28 I have ever seen. I will try to get some pics later. From what I have read on the internet mis-marked models while not common are not exceedingly rare.

It happens. Not a lot, but it happens. Not really a "rare" thing, but a novelty. If you want to verify the gun's configuration when it left the factory, a "letter" ($50) is the only way to positively find out.

HOW DOES ONE RE-BARREL A HIGHWAY PATROLMAN MODEL 28 .357 WITH A MODEL 29 .44 MAGNUM BARREL AS SOME HAVE STATED???

JT I think he means the barrel & cylinder could have been swapped from a 28 on to a 29 frame. It is not high polished and I dont see a reason to convert a 29 to a 28 so I am pretty sure it left S&W as configured. I will have it lettered to comfirm it.

Yup.... Good example of what the gun cranks of the future are going to have to deal with.... The high profile big name customs will be easy but the low volume virtually unknown craftsmen out there are turing out some well made jewels that won't be in any records...

I've seen misstamped model # guns before. Wouldn't surprise me if it slipped out of the factory that way.
