Guys.....I have a boy graduating high school in a few weeks. I want to get him his first 1911 for graduation. The rub is that I need to keep it around $500. I have looked at the new Para GI45 and the Rock Island guns. The Springfield GI might also work. He loves the mil-spec type guns. Are there any I am leaving out......any opinions on the guns above?
Thanks!

The original mil spec Springfields were an all time favorite of mine.... I was having target 1911s built back when the rule was series 70 or earlier Colt or Springfield only. These new ones look good.

The Springfield GI has a good record with the custom smiths and they all want to start with a good platform to build on.

Can't go wrong wit ha Springfield. There is an old defender at the shop up the road for 450, it's pretty well worn, but it's still real tight, and it looks like it may have some work done in the past (the trigger is better than anything I've fondled in recent years) if you might consider used I can get there number for you.

I have Springfields and Kimbers and think highly of both.
A friend and colleague of mine who's judgment I trust implicitly regularly carries a Springfield TRP as a CCW (believe it or not). Anyhow, he is a devoted 1911 fan. He recently picked up one of Springfield's GI versions and he now swears by it. I'd give that model a serious look.

I've decided on the Springfield GI. I have a Springfield "Loaded" model that I love, and my son, being a history buff, wants a replica to the original military version. The local pusher has one in stock, so off I go!
Thanks for the input everybody.

I liked the Milspec. It retained most of the original military look but had most of the things that are added later, like better sights, lowered ejection port, etc.
