gunsbam over on the RF posted a pic of a rattler he took out with a Talo .22 Vaquero and it brought back a memory of hunting with my Grandfather that I hadn't thought about in forever.
One of the last times we went hunting together must have been around 1993-94. It must have been dove season because we were each carrying a 12ga. The landowner had some partially buried metal containers with an open top, maybe 6' deep (I never knew what they were for). Pop saw a rattlesnake at the bottom of one and I took it's head off with my 12. He knew one of the guys at camp would want it for the skin and rattles so he fished it out with a hooked piece of metal.
We headed back to camp which was close by and Pop was carrying it by the rattles at arms length. Now this thing had no head at all and was dead as the proverbial door nail but it gave one of those involuntary twitches that things that are dead but don't know they are dead will give. He flung it as far as he could while cutting loose with a string of profanity that he probably hadn't used since his Navy days in WWII.
When he composed himself and I quit laughing my fool head off we found he was still holding about half the rattles. I don't remember if we went and found the carcass or if we told his friend where to find it but I seem to recall his friend skinned it and laid it out to dry before we left.
Not long after that his knees got too bad to hunt and work kept me from having the time.

thanks for sharing that Andrew.
my grandfather never cared much for hunting but my Dad did big time and I was blessed with 17 years worth of memories. whenever I pick up or use one of his guns i'm always reminded of a day or moment from the past. for that i'm grateful.

That's a cool story. I hunted with my grandpa when I was young too. Lots of good memories. Thanks for sharing.

I'm blessed to still have one grandpa left. He's a veteran of WWII, which ended Seventy Years ago today. I should go see him...

Thanks all! This weekend marks one year since Pop passed. It kind of snuck up on me, I was thinking it was later in the month but the memories that pic brought back made me double check. Glad I did. I was too late to be of the era where you brought your gun to school the Friday before opening day of deer season and went straight from there to the lease, but teachers didn't have an issue giving me the assignments that would be covered while I was out that week. At least it worked that way through Jr High. After that I was too tied up with Band and work in HS to have the time. After graduation I was able to make it a few more times for deer or dove but full time work and then a stint with Uncle Sam wrapped up our hunting time. When I got back to TX he wasn't able to get out to hunt and had let the last lease go. Dad stopped hunting even before that due to shoulder issues and then Mom's cancer. He still shoots occasionally but it's either light recoiling handguns or .22 rifles with the occasional 20ga SxS (rarely). Pop's small "collection" was a Working Man's battery for sure. An 06 for deer, a pair of 1100s (12 and 20) for birds, a couple of handguns and a couple of family hand-me-downs. If my Grandmother hadn't worked for Sears for 20 years and my time in a pawnshop, he might not have had more than the 06, a 12 his brother gave him and the old family .22. There's still a couple that haven't made it to the range since they came to me (and at least 10 years before that). I think I see a range trip for this long weekend... I'm blessed to still have one grandpa left. He's a veteran of WWII, which ended Seventy Years ago today. I should go see him... I second that, by all means go see him.
