Chris Hodgdon returned my call from earlier today, and assured me that there was no intentions of them dropping W231 from their lineup. Whew!!

But, it's the same powder as HP-38. So no problem if they did.

The prices are partly reflected in what it costs to Manufacture the powder. Also Supply and Demand. They can say that they are the same, but usually there is slight differences. Also we have to look at the fact that W296 has been around longer than H110, So a lot of people have that older data and therefore want to buy W296. And If you remember the one thing that is important on the H110 and W296 being the same? Is ,, They have to both be made in Australia. Maybe someone else has the recipe such as the Plant in Florida. See what I mean? Just Food for thought. IDK
The Plant in Florida feels that Titegroup and CFE Pistol should take the place of W231.. ( maybe they don't actually shoot ) OK,,, I looked at the CFE Pistol data for the 45 Colt w/250gr cast. It was higher velocity than everything else listed and low pressure. ( I have not had a chance to try it) But that is where the good ended. 44 Sp 44 mag W231 was the winner. I am just grateful it is not being Killed off. Chris Hodgdon did say to me that the newer powders were better. I was nice on the phone and did not run my smart mouth like I like to do. I wanted to say,, Well it's a good thing..... I am not going to go there.
I will say that if the manufacturer in Florida, decides not to continue making W231 ,,, We may be up the creek without the proverbial paddle. Hodgdon is the sole distributor for Vhitavouri powders. I happen to like several of them. They recently, I think was last year discontinued about three of their powders and also Told Hodgdon that they were not going to ship anymore N120. All the N120 was going to be used in the Manufacturing of 22 rimfire ammo. So you see my example sometimes "IT Happens."

I've seen the supposed e-mail regarding 231 & how hard / slow it is to make, & how we should supposedly switch to one of the newer formula powders...
I'm curious... as I'm a bit of a stick in the mud, & like to use what has worked good for me in the past... I'm not sure what is the "best" replacement for 231???
is there a newer "formula" powder that is more readily available, that has similar burn charictoristics but also meters as well as 231???
I do a lot of smaller caliber reloading from 25 ACP on up, & I get pretty consistant powder drops with a fine ball powder like 231... I hate to see it go, or be in such short supply... as long as it has been since I've seen it on the shelf, even if it started trickling in, it's going to be like buying 22 LR ammo for the next couple years... so maybe it's time to explore what best replaces it...
I've been using AA#5 in similar cartridges with good results... any other suggestions???

If you like W231 Then look for it, and then buy as much as you can afford or can keep, or want. There reason is, Manufacturers will not produce something that is too costly to them, if demand is not there, or if EPA regulations cost them. All about the $$$ I have tried other powders, simply because I like to have a back up, in case I cannot find my favorite. All hell broke loose when I started looking for W231, and called trying to find it. Suggestions? Maybe these addresses need to be a sticky...You can check places like gunbot.net ammoseek.com I think there is another one. Gunbot has been very helpful for me and is quick because it will list by mfg, if I want. The mail order places like powder valley, Butchs reloading, and graf and sons, seem to be some of the ones that usually have the better selections. There is a video of an interview with Chris Hodgdon which helps explain some things like this. go to youtube.com and type in Chris Hodgdon interview. Look for "interview 185 " this was made the year of 2014. But it still explains a lot and helps. That way I am not taking up more space here, with a redundancy.

trouble is, I didn't find 231 even listed on Gunbot yesterday... checked again today, & unless I missed it, I went through all the powders & didn't find a listing... can get a notification if there isn't a listing :/
my trouble is I'm down to less than 2 lbs, so... hoping for the best, & expecting the worst, I'm looking for a couple pounds of something to use in the ineterum

And If you remember the one thing that is important on the H110 and W296 being the same? Is ,, They have to both be made in Australia. The St. Marks Powder plant in Crawfordville Florida (owned by General Dynamics) makes Hodgdon/Winchester ball powders (H110/W296), Alliant Power Pro, IMR Enduron powders, some Accurate powders. Thales Australia Limited (a French owned company)/Australian Defense Industries/Australian Munitions plant in Mulwala New South Wales Australia - makes ADI powders, Hodgdon Extreme powders, and some IMR/Winchester powders...

On a happier note my local pusher got HP38 in (W231 is an exact twin of W231 powder) and I was able to buy 14 pounds over a few trips in the shop buying all I was allowed each time. So finally all of my standard target loads can be loaded again since I was down to less than a pound of W231 and I was trying to sort out what other light loads I could make with whatever powder I could come up with.

I got a pound of HP38 off of GB for a not too silly price and its on the way, along with some primers and some Blue Dot, another hard to find powder.
