Ashley just sent me a Word Doc copy of the load data sheets for the new .45 Colt and .454 Casull loadings he's added to the Garrett Hammerhead line of Cartridges he's taken over from Randy Garrett. He's spent the last year load testing himself, and traveling the span of the continental United States delivering these various loadings to the major revolver builders and friends in the handgun hunting world for their testing. We had a fun shoot out in Cody this year with several boxes each of all the new loadings along. Hamilton Bowen, Jerry Moran, Lee Jurras, Gary Reeder, John Linebaugh and many more were on hand to give them a try, and I heard nothing but praise. I've been in on the testing from the get go, and have fallen in love with the 405 at 1200 FPS from a 5 hole Bisley. It's a heck of a lot of power in a very managable package. The same load in the 4.2" Redhawk that was one of several used for load testing is an awesome, and affordable setup for bear defense, or just a packable pig gun. The 365 is a plenty for pig purposes, but I still like the 405 myself. Velocity is a constantly diminishing variable. Bullet weight and caliber are constants. Running the 1350 and 1500 FPS loads in .454 from a 7.5 FA messed me all up. Now I want an octagon 7.5 FA. The 265 grain load he's developed for the S&W and Colt/USFA revolvers is the real sweetheart of the bunch though. Here's an article John Taffin wrote about his hunt with the 365 in .454 last year. americanhandgunner.com/dream-hunt/

Guess this is all well and good if you shoot factory ammo. Personally, I can't imagine shooting ammo that I didn't load.
To me handloading is an art. Just something about hunting with ammo that you assemble.
Great post and info though.

Garrett has a good reputation.
I don't get the +P labeling for the 45 Colt loads though. Seems like a standard pressure loading to me even if it is hotter than the standard factory loadings. I guess it's to warn off anyone with a 1st generation or similar strength handgun.
I shoot a 270 gr. SAA cast bullet at 1,000 fps out of my 45 Colts-S&W 25-5, USFA, and Harton conversion of a S&W 38-44. It's a fine load that packs more punch than I should ever need.

I'll have to get a box of the H454 to try in my Super Blackhawk Bisley when it comes in. Also would like to get a box of the 265 grain 45 Colt+p for my New Vaquero.

I hear ha but it's not really target ammo. You go paying $5-10k for a big hunt and premium ammo, with a premium reputation, is a tiny drop in the bucket. I reload everything for my handguns but still use premium factory stuff in my hunting rifle. It's expensive but I know how it shoots and I know it works. One less variable out of the equation.

I hear you. Premium ammo is...premium! But I can say the same for the ammo I load myself. Besides I have never paid that kind of money to hunt and probably never will.

Guess it's how you look at it. I hunt local game such as hogs, deer, etc.
If someone want to pay it then Merry Christmas to somebody.
To me, crafting the perfect ammo is a huge part of any hunt. In fact, it's my favorite part.

It's crazy to think of loaded ammo at $2 per round as inexpensive, especially when it's ammo I load at home, until one starts feeding a .458 Lott and uses Cutting Edge Bullets solid brass (individually-lathe-milled) bullets. $2 per round sounds like a bargain!!!
