I have a 44 mag Mountain gun 629-5 with a problem.
After about 50 rounds are fired through the gun (after a good cleaning) the trigger starts failing to go back forward all the way and I will have to give it a little help to return it to it's complete forward position. After a good cleaning and oiling it shoots fine until I get about 50 rounds through it and it starts doing it again.
Can anyone give me an idea of what may be causing this and is there anything I can do myself before bringing it to a gunsmith?

Weak rebound spring.

Go to Brownells and buy a good spring kit. Replace all springs (I do this to all guns) and it will make the action feel better. Clean and lube all moving parts lightley. While you are there look CLOSE for burrs or rough spots. If this doesn't fix it take it to a smith. Tell him what it's doing and what you have done to it.

If you check the rebound spring I'll bet you find someone has cut several coils off it to lighten the trigger pull. That will cause what you describe. However if that's the problem it should do it clean or dirty. Very little grit and grime gets down inside in just 50 rounds.
I always keep my Smiths equipped with a full strength rebound slide spring. That way they work as they are supposed to.

I recently purchased a LNIB Performance Center 629-6 Light Hunter. It had entirely too light an action. Worked ok with Federal Primers but was unreliable (very) with Winchester primers. I ended up replacing the mainspring. The rebound slide was also unreliable (would not return the trigger quickly). I replaced that also. Now, the revolver has a very smooth action but it is NOW reliable. Oh, I also stoned the rebound slide (was rather rough).
