I have got the fever for a 4" 357 magnum to carry while walking the dog in the woods and on my hip when out and about. Which would you all recommend, and why? I like the 586's but what about G-P 100 match campion with adjustable sights?

I would suggest the Wiley Clapp GP100. sounds like you want for SD and not target shooting. 3" barrel and shoots to point of aim at least out to 50yds. Quick to get into action and easy to see combat sights. GP100 can handle the heaviest loads all day and not shoot loose. Built to last. See gunblast.com for a review.

I have both and prefer my mid-90s 586, but if I were restricted to buying new revolvers--and didn't want to mount a red dot or a scope--I would choose the GP100 because it does not have a hole in the frame for an internal lock.

I have a GP Match Champion and it is very accurate and I like the balance better than the 586. I like L frame weight and size of revolvers but I don't particularly care for the full underlugs as they are nose heavy to me.
I have four L frames: 2 Model 69s, a 686SSR and a Match Champion, all non full lug profile L frames.

Hi... I have a 686 Silhouette Model that is marvelously accurate, but the 8-3/8"barrel with full-length underlug is long and heavy. I have shot GP100s and found them reliable and accurate. My favorite .357Mag DA revolvers for hiking and open carry are a couple of Colt Troopers I bought used several years ago. I paid about $350 each a couple of months or so apart. One has a solid rib and the other a vent rib. Very nice revolvers.
Still, I find myself carrying my Ruger BlackHawk with 4-5/8" barrel in .357Mag more and more when hiking. The shorter barrel doesn't seem to get in the way as much as the two 6-1/2" barrelled BlackHawks that get shot a lot more at the range.

Of those two it'd be the GP100 Match Champion by a WIDE margin.
The reasons, I don't like under bbl lugs nor the lock new S&Ws come with. Get the GP.

I've had 1 686 and 3 GP100s. I prefer the Ruger. But the old model Blackhawk is my favorite.

This might have been a good opportunity for a survey. The GP100 and L frame S&W are both fine 357 platforms. I've owned a L frame S&W from the beginning of the L frame. We have a GP100 on the range. I've shot them both extensively and installed spring kits in both. While there is a lot to be said for the GP100, last count I own three L frames. Two don't have locks. The GP100 Match Champion tempted me but I'm not buying. When I needed a 4 inch revolver for IDPA I traded a no lock 686 for a no lock 586.

I love S&W DA revolvers but if I was down to one last .357 Magnum it would be the GP100. I have not yet shot the Match Champion but do have a standard 4". I love it mainly because of the smmoth DA pull and easily interchangeable sights. At this point I have a green FO front with steel square not round shoulders that really stand out in the rear white outline notch. If this were my only gun I would add tritium night sights...other than that it is perfect for me...
Never did bond with the L-frame...I probably have 40 S&W revolvers and the only L is a 686-7 .38 Super...and own it only because I love .38 Super....

I think the Match Champion (Silly Name aside) is the best, as in handiness , pack-ability, accuracy, etc. current production 357 made. If Ruger made a 7 shot version, it would be perfect. My old S&W L frame 7 shot Mountain Gun will suffice for me!

How about a 3 inch Security Six? I have a Liberty model SS gun and like it a lot.

I never have seen any advantage to 2.5 and 3" 357s.. a 4" will carry and hide easier and long sight radius and mv are superior on the longer guns.
