I have enjoyed very much the latest posts concerning these two cartridges but would like to know if anyone has paid attention to differing velocities in the various barrel lengths offered ?

Jeff Quinn, Gunblast.com on 327 has table towards the bottom of the article that shows velocities for all three barrel lengths. The 4 5/8" gun was actually a bit faster than the 7 1/2". gunblast.com/Ruger-Single7.htm Brian Pearce (Feb 2015) Handloader Mag (No. 294) did a review of the .327. He also compares FPS of 4 5/8" and 7 1/2"-- 7 1/2" a bit faster -- 28 fps largest diff with 5 different factory 327 mags ranging from 85gr Fed (1,444 vs 1,455 fps) to 130gr Buffalobore (1,330 vs 1,358). FWIW, Paul

I kept reading the results with higher velocities coming from the 5.5" vs the 7 1/2 barrels with the singles sevens so I cut a 7 1/2 to 6 1/2. I was amazed at the difference with the American Eagle 85gr factory loads. Went from avg of 1440 with 7.5" to 1589fps in the 6.5". I do have to say I took the barrel gap from .007 to .003 when I shortened the barrel so I would say that helped for sure. Don't get powder spray back anymore either. Glad I did it.

Longer sight radius is going to be the the most significant difference.

Keeping in mind the cartridge was originally designed for short barrel guns and ammo loaded accordingly. Think the difference in barrel lengths will show up more when loading heavier bullets with slower burning magnum powder.

Unless you take one gun and cut the barrel you might get a better number shooting the cartridges through a solid barrel like a TC Contender. IMHO there is Way to much variation in a set of revolvers for measured velocity from gun to gun to really be meaningful.

I agree Stan. I have seen much varying reports from the same ammo.

Yep. Gary is building me a 300 GNR / 32-20 right now. Will have 32-20s with .312, .310" & .308" bores. So I see some major experimenting going on soon.
