I was over on the CastBoollits forum and was looking at a hollow base mold for a 200gn bullet designed for a .41 Colt
Does the hollow base simply give you more case capacity when compared to a solid?

SOFT BULLET DESIGNED TO SWELL UP AND ENGAGE THE RIFLING. MOSTLY USED IN BLACK POWDER AMMO. "MINIE BALLS" WERE HOLLOW BASE FOR USE IN MUZZLE LOADERS.

The 41 Colt is dimensionally challenged. It was loaded with heeled bullets for many years but was later changed to an inside lubricated bullet (case length also jumped around a bit). The inside lubricated bullet is only .386" instead of the original .406" heeled bullet. Throat and barrel dimensions did not change from the original specifications thus necessitating a hollow base bullet to expand and engage the rifling.
I had an Army Special in 41 Colt and a Rapine hollow base mold. When cast of 30-1 these bullets shot very well over medium charges of 231. It was slow going casting pistol bullets with a traditional hollow base mold. Maybe some maker could produce a Cramer-esque hollow base multi cavity mold?

Keiths hollowbase designs were intended to reduce bullet weight for higher velocities. The base skirts were really thick to resist expansion (for the most part). I always thought it was weird tha he designed a hollowbase at all, but his thoughts for them were all laid out in "Sixguns".

Winchester factory 45 Colt ammo of the late 60s was loaded with a swaged Lubaloy 255 RNFP bullet with a hollow base. Later Winchester dropped the copper wash but the bullet remained the same. This ammo was the most accurate of any factory or handloaded 45 Colt ammo at that time. Especially since my Colt SAAs had 0.456" chamber throats and 0.451" groove diameter barrels.
