A few years back my buddy located a S&W 624. He pointed it out to me knowing I am a 44spl dude. I picked it up at a great price. It is a great gun and quite accurate. The only thing is it has a 6 1/2" Bbl. I really like 4-5" Bbls. Then I can carry it on the hip in a vehicle. I have never seen a 4" 624 Bbl for sale(just the barrel). It seems I can't use a 629 Bbl as the barrel extension would be too short. Having one machined would probably cost quite a bit. Just having the barrel chopped might not work as the stock barrel has the ramp integral on the barrel. I don't know if there is enough thickness in the barrel to mount a ramped front sight on it.
I did consider simply selling it and buying what I want. But, the 4" models are getting a bit pricey. I know I could simply shoot 44 spls in my 629 and 29 but what fun would that be? The 624 feel like I am holding a model 66. It handles really well and shoots good. Should I simply not bother? Is what I am looking to do too big of a hassle?
What are your thoughts or ideas?

I used SDM to shorten a 29-2 to 5"s. They do excellent work.
Forgot to add that they installed an interchangeable front sight system, such as that found on the Classic/DX series.
It has become my favorite .44.

Or,,there is at least 4 for sale on GB for varying amounts of dollars. I would just get one of those, sell yours to someone that likes longer barrels and then everyone is happy!

I agree. You can pick up a mtn. gun pretty reasonably if you watch the various sites.
By the time you get done having a barrel cut and fixed up you'd surely make up any difference.

All good ideas. I will check out SDM though.

Mike I am a huge fan of the .44 Special. Another suggestion for carrying your gun in a vehicle might be a good shoulder holster. I've used them & it is a workable alternative.

I think a 5 " 44 Special would be just about perfect.

I'd go the Mtn Gun route, that's what I did! 5" are neat but require custom leather. 4" Revo works well in a vehicle. Mounted cops, those in a vehicle, usually prefer the 4".
Check the throats on that 624. I have a 24-3 that it's throats are .431-432. Accuracy was mediocre until I slugged the throats and increased the diameter of my cast bullets.
God Forbid, but if you're ever forced to sell the gun the Magnums are easier to sell, to locals.

Sounds like you are a candidate for one of those 5 shot model 69's.
