Just wondering what the consensus is on "scout scope mounts". The only rifle I might want one on is my Marlin 1895 in .45-70. I currently have williams receiver sight mounted on the gun. Once tried a scope on it,but the way the scope tapped my eyeglasses made me nervous. In other words I'm considering keeping a scope on the gun,but far away from my head. Anyone tried one? Would my current sights interfere the scope?
Thanks For Looking!

I had a Marlin Guide Gun that was outfitted with a Wild West Guns scout mount and Leupold Scout Scope. Worked great.

I have a 95 guide gun in 450 Marlin and my partner has one in 45-70. We both have the XS scout mount with 1 3/4 Burris EER scopes. We love them. Very fast. With QD Warne rings they are easy to pull off for open sights. The mount requires you to remove the rear barrel sight. I put an XS front and receiver rear, he opted for a Williams receiver rear and fiber optic front.

Thanks Gary, if I can count enough pennies I may get one. The optic however, would be either what I have on hand,or have to wait a while. Do you know if you're friend had to move the receiver sight all the way down to use the scope?
Thanks!

Both setups work without changing the receiver sight. I will try to get picture of them.

twbryan,
I have a 6.5 X 55 Mauser set up with a 2 X EER Leupold in a scout mount. I had always been intrigued with the concept and it let me mount a scope without having to modify the safety and bolt handle. I don't really have any problem with the setup and could live with it fine if need be but do not like it quite as well as a traditional scope setup. No real complaint, it just seems that I am not getting quite as good a 'view'.
I also have a NEF 45/70 with a short barrel and polymer stock & forend. With full-house loads, you definitely want some room between the scope and your eye. On this one, I mounted a cheapo 2.5 X shotgun/muzzleloader scope with about a 5" eye relief. I like the view I get through this setup a little better. If I could find a scope with about a 6" eye relief it would be about perfect.
The scout scope would not require removal of your receiver sight, the 5" eye relief scope would, one with 6" might not.
Though I would (slightly) prefer a conventional mount with a 5" - 6" eye relief, if I already had a proper EER scope on hand, I would give that a try first.

Gary,I'd love to see a picture.
Shakey, only things I have on hand are a cheap pistol scope(barska or bsa) , a cheap red dot (bsa) and an old Bushnell phantom scope(no mount). It'd be nice to have a proper scout scope, but that's not in the budget. I had wondered how the view compared,I guess it's all in the amount of eye relief.

twbryan This is the only picture I have at the moment. The rear sight is still mounted below the scope.

Looks like thats a WWG gun setup head to toe. Nice stuff but not easy on the budget.

Ordered the xs scout scope mount. I'll probably have to put a red dot on it until finances improve, but it's better than a cardboard tube with a crochet string reticle.

As Gary observed, it is a WWG set up. The stock is Kevlar.

I too use an XS scout mount on my 1895 in .45-70 with a 2X Leupold EER scope. Works like a charm and makes me keep my distance at a reasonable level.
My gun likes heavy bullets and it kicks pretty good, so it's never a problem. I also have a near matching .444 Marlin that loaded hot kicks too, but I just put a standard scope mount on it and a lower powered scope with 4"+ eye relief.
ETA: Ron - how do you like that looped lever? I have debated over and over whether or not to get one for one of mine.
