I am trying to re build several older replica BP revolvers and need some advice on surface hardening of some metal parts.I have and use Kasenit and with a propane torch I can surface harden small parts sufficiently. When I try to harden larger parts the propane torch just doesn't seem to get the metal hot enough.I cannot presently afford a MAPP gas torch or oxy/acytelene.Does anyone have any suggestions for something cheaper that will work?

The can style to start charcoal for a barbecue can be used as a very effective and inespensive forge. Fill it with charcoal and get it lit. Using a hair dryer set to blow just cold air hold it at an angle to the holes at the bottom of the can. Wrap large parts, hammers, receivers, etc. in aluminum foil with a genereous amount of Kasenit surrounding the part. Lay the wrapped part on top of the coals. The heat you can generate is close to 2000 degrees if not above. I have hardened entire receivers for Italian revolvers this way. Of course you have to remove the barrel first. Ten minutes on the "forge" with air circulating with amaze you with the BTUs generated. Grab the part with hot dog tongs and quickly lower it into cold water with a circulating motion for maximum cooling. Works beautifully.

WOW !! Thank you !! I had completely forgotten about this post! Sounds like you have done this a few times !! I will have to give it a try !! At the heat level you are talking about ,the aluminum foil does not melt???
