Ran across a new Colt's Gatling gun in a local shop. Shiney brass all over and apparently well made wooden carrier. I was surprised it only had 5 barrels. It was actually roped off with no less than 6 DO NOT TOUCH signs on it. Along with a pricetag...$59,999.99.
Very pretty...but a rich man's toy no doubt.

$60,000 would buy FIVE Heym/Martini Express rifles, or TWENTY Freedom Arms revolvers, or TWELVE Keith No. 5 conversions from Bowen, or THREE Heym PH double rifles, or...

I have a friend who owns one of the reproduction, 22 caliber Gatlings. His wife bought it for him for Christmas several years ago. If I recall correctly, it was the one donated to the Gatling family. I found a book on the Gatlings, with a photo of Mrs. Gatling in it. She used to live in our area. I gave the book to my friend to go with his gun. It is one sweet looking gun!

I can't afford one at $60,000.00, but there is someone not very far from Wheeling, West Virginia. About 60 miles west of Pittsburgh, PA that makes a copy of the Gatling. And if I remember it's a 45/70.

I got to shoot one once. The gentleman who owned it invented plumber's strapping, the perforated metal banding for holding pipes along joists, as well as a military vehicle museum down in Dundee MI. I cranked off twenty rounds at a 55 gallon drum and it definitely puts a smile on your face! His was a 45/70 as well. Cleaning the blackpowder fouling out it was bit of a chore though between all of the barrels and the mechanism.
