I have it in my head that I need a levergun with the mag tube a few inches short of the muzzle, with a banded express style front sight.
Has anyone ever seen something set up like this?

Yes, it was by a company that did custom Marlins, can't remember name. It looked like a banded front sight from NECG. Trapr

I think Nonneman (http://www.leveractions.com/) has done a few leverguns with banded ramp fronts.

Forgot who did the custom Marlins but 20 or 30 years ago there was a gunsmith who was doing custom Marlin 1895's with a banded ramp front and a 3 leaf shallow V express rear.

I recall seeing a picture of a Winchester Model 71 converted to 50 Alaskan that had a full length mag tube with a big clamp to hold the mag tube to the barrel - can't recall if the front sight was part of it or not. After a quick search, here's the gun I'm thinking of: Apparently there was an issue with the full length mag tubes not holding up to the recoil. In any case - clearly a custom fab'd job. If it involves metal and you have money - I think just about anything can be done.
