Until tonight I was not aware that one could by a new Uberti 1873 carbine (only) in .44 magnum. I nearly fell off the Christmas Tree when I read that. I noticed a couple of GB sellers listing such and emailed them to tell them to double check. Then had to email them back and say, well guess you were right and I was wrong. I hate it when that happens! But seriously, I had no idea owing to the so called weak toggle link action of the '73 that they would chamber the magnum. Read on another forum where a guy handled one at SHOT with a Uberti rep and they had every confidence in the product. I guess maybe I can relax a little bit and not worry about my new .44-40 Win. No, I wont hot rod it but perhaps I don't have to keep it at 12000 CUP. I was thinking perhaps the way to load it is the same way I load my Colt SAA in .44-40 and just go with that. I don't rod it either.

I had a 73 in 45 Colt and my son has an 1876 in 45-60. I have heard for a long time that the toggle link was not as weak as everyone gave it credit for. There was even a story that Dave Scoville did in Handloader a couple years ago where he intentionally pushed a 357 Magnum until failure. He ended up blowing the barrel apart on it but the action stayed locked. I kept my 45 at black powder levels and Im not going to push the 45-60 but I do believe the action is stronger than one would think.

I found out a couple of years ago they were making one and began making plans to get one as a companion to my stable of my .44 Specials. Got it. Love it... ...with the exception of the rubber butt pad. I intend to someday restock it and use the traditional crescent plate. Haven't shot it just a whole bunch yet, but it seems to be plenty accurate. I don't worry a bit about it being able to handle .44 Magnum level loads. If there was any doubt, I don't imagine Uberti would market the thing. Cholla

That is fantastic shooting for such a gun as this! I have had scoped bolt guns not shoot that well. Sweet!
